Playing Dolby DTS on Denon AVR 3200

I recently added a bluray player (Sony bdp bx-2). It is connected via digital coax to an older Denon AVR 3200. When playing a bluray that has Dolby DTS audio I wasn't getting any sound. Didn't see any menu settings in the Denon that looked applicable. Went into the audio settings on the bluray player and changed the default audio output to be the coax, then also changed one other setting that said change it to PCM if the audio was being output to something that did not have a built in DTS decoder. Now when I put the bluray in I get Dolby Digital during the beginning credits and while on the selection menu screen but once I start the actual movie I get Dolby Prologic. Is this just one of the limitations of an older receiver?

Does the Denon decode DTS?

Surfing around the web, it doesn't look like the 3200 decoded DTS (do you see a DTS logo on the front of the unit)? So your receiver must be downconverting DTS to Prologic.

Should have gotten a player with full analog output. Then you could run analog to the 5.1 input on the Denon and still get full HD sound no matter which codec. If you got that Sony at Costco you could probably still swap.

If your receiver isnt decoding dts audio that means it's very old and time to upgrade.

I'd like to point out that Dolby and DTS are two different things.

Why? The amps are more important to audio quality than fresh codecs, if they are still working it's fine. Replacing that Denon will cost over a grand to match quality.

Ok, not sure I'm with you. The bluray does have Line Out, left & right. That's analog, right? But if I just take that to the Denon won't that still be Prologic (analog)?

Re: Playing Dolby DTS on Denon AVR 3200

With your player, yes. But there are players with 6/8 channel analog output. They also decode the Dolby or DTS codec for you, so your receiver doesn't have to. This would give you the full HD sound through your old receiver's 5.1 channel input. I am doing this right now with a 2001 vintage Onkyo. Sounds great.

Example of an inexpensive player:

Ok, I see exactly what you're saying now, makes sense. I see Amazon has the player you mention above for $114 today. Thanks for the help.
