Blu/DVD vs Computer DVD drive

Here is the issue:

I have a set of dvd's, specifically, The West Wing (double sided) that freeze and stutter and even lock up during certain episodes. They do this if I use my Pioneer DVD player or my Oppo BD83. However, if I use my computer burner they work fine. Is it the stronger laser in the burner? That's what I'm guessing anyway, but what I really need to know is if I should blame the dvds or hardware.
I am aware of issues with these double sided discs and even bought another copy of S2 but still have the same issues... just with different episodes. For this reason, I tend to blame the discs.
I really don't understand what the problem is here. I have seen no other issue with any other discs in my standalone players. Anyone have wisdom to impart?

Have you updated the firmware on your Oppo? If not, you probably need to.
I've run across one movie that wouldn't play in mine. I updated the firmware and it played perfectly.

Yes. I had a BD that would not play. Ironically, I thought the movie sucked and I sold it.
