Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I've owned two Oppos --- a DVD player and now a Blu-ray player --- and I've bought both directly from Oppo because they were out of stock at Amazon. The advantage with Amazon, of course, is the free shipping, so that would be the way to go.

You'll love whichever Oppo you get. Their players and customer support are just fantastic.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

It looks like $9.50 shipping charge, but I'm mostly worried about CA tax when ordering from Oppo. I didn't see a charge for it when I put it into my cart and selected CA as the state. Where do they sell it from? I would think since the company is located in CA that they would have to charge tax.

The other choice is whether I want the backlit remote for an extra $9.50. It's thicker than the other one, is the backlighting worth getting? And if I buy it from Amazon does Oppo offer an exchange or just the sale of a spare remote?

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I called them. They do charge tax in CA (Amazon, here I come!) and will sell the backlit remote for $12.50, only $3 more, so I'd have 2 remotes. That gives me a chance to see if the glow-in-the-dark works ok.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I own the oppo blu ray player. I prefer the harmony remote over the oppo remote. it has more range.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I'm not too concerned, the range is only about 20 feet. But I'll see how it does.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I got the Oppo today. It seems like a pretty nice player.

I don't see anything in the instructions about how to move the subtitles. Any help would be appreciated!

[Nevermind, I figured it out. I'm not happy that I can't move subtitles to the top though. Only about 1/3 up from the bottom of the screen.]

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

Lucky I got the Oppo BDP-80 when I did, they've discontinued it and it's no longer available. They don't have a replacement for it either.

I added a region-free module that cost $25 and it works great, at least on DVD, I don't have any foreign BD yet.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

Please excuse my ignorance in this matter, but I am looking for a region free Blu ray player in the $100-200 range. I've been looking around town in a few stores and have been looking at the boxes. Everything that I have seen so far have been 1 or A. I assume the 1 means region 1 does A mean the same thing? I also am assuming ( because I haven't found one yet ) that it would say Region free on the box, but is there a symbol for that to look for if Region free is not listed on the box?

You can't really buy one like that. There are physically modded players online, or some other options mentioned here.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

No. Regular HDMI should be fine.

This is the purpose of that new version. But, no thanks. I mean, my HDMI runs to my TV, the ethernet runs to my router. I don't want them together, just like I never wanted TV/VCR combos.

Re: BluRay player on a budget?

I just got my blu ray yesterday and my tv isn't equipped with a HDMI jack. So I have to use regular cables. Only problem is, everything has a blue tint, esp. faces. Do you know what's going on here?

It's supposed to be like that. It's blu ray after all.

But seriously, do you possible have composite cables in component jacks, or vice versa?

Ha! That was the first thing that I thought of, it's a bluray player so everything must be blue. But I'll try switching the cables around and see what happens.
