Re: need sub recommendation

You think I'm joking? My room is 15x30x7.5 and a midrange SVS could play 18Hz to over 100db, but you could still hear everything else. And clean, esp when I dropped my crossover to 50Hz so I absolutely could not localize the sub at all. Name a sub from another company under $3000 that can do any of that.

Maybe you should try one. Here's the kind of thing you learn with an SVS: my furnace rattles something fierce at 18Hz and 100db, I can't hear until 22Hz, and pretty much the feel disappears after 15 (going downward), so I can't really recommend worrying about some of these subs that can be tuned to below 15. (and that was from my first one, my current one is...more)

If a $700 SVS can do 18Hz at over 100db then that is amazing. What model sub are you referring to?

And i certainly have nothing against SVS subs. I have heard them and recommended one to my friend. Don't remember what model it is (it was several years ago), but it is a big as a coffee table It looks and sounds great. My only issue is some people tend to think SVS is the only sub to consider. I constantly read of people comparing their mid priced SVS to other high end stuff out there and claiming it is better, when generally the professional reviews i read tell a different story.

Either way, SVS does indeed make amazing subs and should be on anyone short list when shopping for a new sub.

Re: need sub recommendation

Professional reviews are usually a joke. Why I gave up on such magazines.

My first was an early PC+, I'm afraid it is about $1000, now. (you know, it might have been closer to $800, I'm fuzzy) Although they've upgraded drivers at least twice since then, and every upgrade is frightening. Of course, the Ultra is more capable. I now have a PB2+, box version with 2 drivers, which they no longer make. It isn't small, but some current models are.

The reason we say SVS is the only one to consider is the price-performance ratio. I like Martin Logan, and other companies, but with this performance compared to them, it's just no contest. Also, I sold my PC+ for something like 75% of the original cost, then paid 75% for my current one used. I wouldn't even be able to get half of the discounted price I paid for my Klipsch speakers. (maybe if I found a desperate Ebayer)

just my luck. the STF1 just went on sale for $254 and $29 shipping!

i've been doing some research and found another sub - H-100 that was designed by HSU and is more powerful and cheaper at $239 total.

i was just going to post a link to the acoustech sub. i have one. it is awesome. if i want it to i can get it to shake my entire house. the door to my attic actually bounces. it also has real nice tight bass. i would say it can be a bit boomy at times but that is probably due to my settings and placement. also the lower end subs tend to be more boomy from what i understand. overall though i love the sub and highly recommend it. if you google that sub you will find very good reviews for it. basically for the price you cant really do better. though im not sure how it compares to the stf1 since it was more expensive when i was looking for a sub.

oh and its really nice looking too. it is big and heavy though.

Re: need sub recommendation

thanks guys.
i got my STF-1 yesterday.
i was concerned that it was only an 8 inch sub and my prev sub was 10 inch so thought it might be underpowered.
played with it yesterday and it has more than enough power and sounds great!
