My brother has a Panasonic A105 and it is giving him problems. It has a problem playing some DVDs. I have noticed that the DVDs it is having problems with have light scratching.
Any way to run a self diagnostics or head allignment on this machine?
Weird

This is a problem player and is the lowest rated one on Audio Review. All the 2nd generation Panasonics (A105/A110/A310) have bad laser pickups that only last 6 to 12 months.
Light scratches should never give a DVD player problems. If that were the case the DVD rental market would disappear.

My A110 has been fine....have never seen any reports of problems with this machine...this machine was actually professionally reviewed by Robert George who stated this player was up there with the higher end Sony players!!! The A105 may have problems but I would have to disagree with the statement that the A110 has had continual problems with laser pickup. If this is so, it is the first I have heard about it.
Hmmmm..just looked at user reviews at audioreview.com......I am really surprised that all of these people are having problems with this machine. Sounds like there was a batch of A110's that were released with problems but I would say the majority are fine!!! I guess we will see in the next few months with my player!!!! I have been looking for another player anyway and I am sure as hell not buying Toshiba with all of the reported problems they have had lately...probably go with a high end Marantz.....

The interesting thing is the earlier Denon DVD players use the same laser pickup since the video portion is based on the Panasonic players. Well guess what...The flagship Denon DVD-5000, a $3000 player, is having the same problem. As well, I've read 3 posts from Panasonics DVD-H1000 owners saying they have had to get it fixed in less than 6 months.
I have nothing against Panasonic in general but just thought this was interesting. Their latest players have different laser pickups and have solved this problem.
