Blu-ray playback issue--please help!

I've been having a really strange issue, and I'm trying to diagnose it...Unfortunately I don't have any other TV's or Blu-ray players available to help diagnose...

I've got a Sony Bravia S-Series 52" LCD TV and an LG BD270 blu-ray player connected by HDMI. A few days ago, some issues began: when playing Sleeping Beauty, the sound dropped from several previews. But then the movie played fine, so we thought maybe the previews were just faulty on the disc...

Then, a day later, suddenly the TV says "no signal" and we can't see anything playing on the blu-ray! The counter on the player seems to count really slowly or not at all at times, so I begin wondering if it's the player. After resetting, the player's LG startup screen pops up, disappears, and then we get "no signal" again before we can do anything...

Today, I decided to try switching the HDMI cable from HDMI1 to HDMI3. Suddenly it's all good! Picture and sound! Woohoo! But, during playback of Forbidden Kingdom, sound drops from one of the previews. The movie is currently playing with audio/video okay...but I'm concerned it's going to get worse like last time...

It still seems to me that the player is the most likely culprit--but it could be the cable...or the TV. I'm figuring it's not the TV, since the LG menu screen did briefly pop up even on HDMI1. If it's the player, then why did moving the cable to HDMI3 help (at least for now). And, if it's the cable, why did the player's counter seem to be on the fritz...

Any ideas?

I'm figuring my next step will be to find another cable and try that first...Since I don't have another TV available right now, I can't try the player on another TV...

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone's had similar problems and has a pretty good idea of what's wrong here...

Thanks!

Re: Blu-ray playback issue--please help!

My first suggestion would be to try a new HDMI cable and see if that helps at all. (if the issue is purely the audio from now on, you can even try hooking up the video with HDMI and run some RCA audio cables to the TV (or look into a dedicated sound system).

I had some HDMI handshaking issues on my last sony TV (video would cut out and not be able to 're-connect' at times). The fix was to unplug everything from it (including AC) and let it sit for a few hours, then turn it back on. It fixed my problems! Being able to see the startup screen and then a signal loss afterwards sounds like a handshaking issue to me (and almost identical to the problem I had). SONY even suggested it was a copyright issue (unable to authenticate the connection), usually due to a faulty HDMI board - step 1 was to reset the TV (unplug, let it sit for a few hours) and then step 2 would be to send someone out.

If you don't have another HDMI cable, do you have another HDMI device (PS3, DVD Player, Xbox 360) to test it with? How about component video cables to test the player?

The players display could be looking odd while playing previews (warning screens, trailers, etc..) as they're usually short in runtime (a few seconds to a few minutes) and can sometimes "stick" on the last frame while it loads the next clip.

Just the standard answer, but is there a newer firmware for your player? If so, you might try and update it..

Have you had the TV and Player very long? If you just picked up the player, I'd just return it and see if a new player fixes the issue.

Re: Blu-ray playback issue--please help!

I am having similar problem with my Sony BDP S360 player. When i play certain Blu Ray movies like, Mamma Mia, Pirates of the Caribbean - World's End, Monsters Inc. I hear 4 -5 times high pitched squeaking sound, and then the signal to the TV is lost. I then Pause and Play Again, it plays fine. Its Very Random and i am sure it is not the Disc, because it plays flawlessly afterwards. It very random, frustrating and embarrasing when you are demoing your HT setup to friends.
Will appreciate, is anyone has any experience regarding how to fix this?
