Can any one tell me if I buy a s vhs cable is that the same thing as the svideo on the back of a dvd player. I was looking at monster cables last night and was thinking about trying out the visual improvements that I've heard about with these cables, but have never heard of them refered to as svhs cables before.

"S-VHS cable" and "S-video cable" are the same thing. My guess is that SVHS VCRs were one of the first consumer goods to use s-video cables and thus got the "SVHS" designation.
