Blu Ray component hookup question

I have a Moviemate 55. It is 854 x 480p. If I hook up a Blu Ray player via component cables, and play Blu Ray dvds on it, will I get the Blu ray image or any increased blu Ray benefits from this? Thanks

Re: Blu Ray component hookup question

Since it's 480p, that's all you're going to get, even if the source is higher, because that's all it's capable of. This is for video only.

Now, if you have a surround receiver with the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog inputs, and you get a blu ray player with the same outputs, you'll get the benefits of the HD audio. How much difference you'll notice from regular DD and dts, depends on how good your receiver and speakers are.
Good luck!

For future reference, I wanted to point out that they aren't "Blu Ray dvds." Blu-rays and DVDs are two separate things.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it or try it.

My first projector was an Infocus X1 and I got "free" OTA HD. It looked better than SD signal. I know it wasn't HD, as the X1 was 480p. But it looked good!

The BD player may be an excellent player in it's own right. Even with a SD DVD.

I agree. Give it a try.
Even though it will still be 480p, it may be a "sharper" 480p, because of the source material, and look a little better than usual. It never hurts to try something.
Good luck!

One benefit of Blu-ray is fewer compression artifacts than DVD, so while the resolution won't be any better than a DVD, the visual image quality may still be slightly better.

Re: Blu Ray component hookup question

Sorry to hijack the thread, but a similar question has come to my own mind (sadly I should already know this) - can component pass a 720P signal or is 480P the maximum? Thanks.

edit - Never mind - found it.

Ditto. HD looked better than 480i. Less compression issues, deinterlacing issues, etc. Not a whole lot, but a tad better. On a projector the little differences matter a lot more.
