When I hit the "DVD 5.1" button on my stereo system, not only does it go into dolby digital 5.1 surround mode, but it also clears the equalizer setting to "Flat."

My equalizer has settings such as Flat, Rock, Pop and Classical.

If the DVD 5.1 button makes it go to "Flat" is that the proper sound setting DVD warrants? "As the director intended?" Personally, I think Rock gives a nice, full sound, but I also want to hear the movie as it's meant to be heard.

It would be helpful to know what equipment you're talking about (receiver manufacturer/model name(or number)). Maybe others have had the same experience on the same equipment.

I leave my bass and treble controls at neutral because that is the way it is intended to be heard or at least the way the mixed it. It may vary though depending on your speakers. You may need to adjust accordingly. I would say that you should experiment and try raising levels until it sounds best for you. I found that if I increased the treble it sounded to bright in DD 5.1. I have a subwoofer and found it sounded too boomy when I raised the bass level. I don't have an equalizer just the bass and treble controls on my receiver. Hope this helps.

The proper sound setting is what ever sounds best to you. You are the one listening so set it to what sounds good to you. If you like it in the rock setting then thats the proper setting! It's all about you. Experiment.
