You need a 5.1 receiver w a/decoder(or have the decoder in the player) to listen to EITHER and you need a complete surround package for 5.1 Dolby or 5.1 DTS. If you don't have a complete package, I believe most disks have a 2.0 track, so it won't matter which you get. That way you can go DTS so you have it if you ever get a full surround setup OR if you want the extras, go for the version with more of em.

NO, the sony 530 does NOT have a dts decoder; however it passes the dts bitstream to a receiver.
Without a full complement of speakers you will not get 5.1 sound period.

ok i'm confused
doesn't every DTS disc have a separate stereo track or something for those who don't have a 5 speaker system?
right now, i only have a 2 channel system and when i listen to DD discs, the 5.1 is downmixed...however, i've heard that DTS doesn't do this
so if i were to listen to a DTS through my stereo, is there a track i can access? is downmixed 5.1 better than a regular PCM stereo track??

DTS 5.1 doesn't downmixed like DD 5.1. Usually a DTS disc will contain a DD 2.0 track or a stereo PCM track as an alternative.
When listening to a DTS track on a stereo system. A menu usually pop-ups with two options: DTS or DD stereo or PCM. It gives you the option of either DTS or DD stereo or PCM. On other disc(namely DTS5.1/DD5.1 disc like some Universal releases)you have to manually select the audio format you want to listen through in the Audio/Language setup page on the disc.
