I hate putting a plug in for them, but I am using a Radio Shack 15-1994 and have had no problems with it. I finally have all of the functions available to me from all of the remotes, it is the first time I have been able to put the rest of the remotes away and not have to pull them out for Menus, Programming, etc. It is a learning remote as well, so even if the preset code don't work you can reprogram any of the keys.

It is available for about $30 from Radio Shack. Despite the low price and the Radio Shack brand, it really is a nice remote. You can find a FAQ and lots of info on the remote at www.remotecentral.com

Here's a link to the remote's description:

I concur with Gordon32. I also have the RS 15-1994. I love it. It is widely regarded as the best inexpensive universal remote.

I also have the RS 15-1994 (I think it's on sale this week for $29.99) and love it. It has many of the features of expensive remotes and is extremely easy to use. You can also find it's cousin (I think the One-For-All 6 in 1) at Walmart for $20.00 (Check remote central to be sure). Both have similar features, but the RS one looks better on the coffee table.

I own a Marantz RC 2000 mkII remote, it does offer much more extensive control, but at $200 + dollars I really can't reccomend it over the RS remote unless you absolutely need it's fuctionallity.

i agree with the two previous statements, the radioshack 15-1994 is by far the best remote for under $50. I replaced six remotes! It does macros as well as learn from other remotes.

Yeah I have a great remote!

Maratz Mark V. This baby's loaded. But the best part is how it is laid out. Most of the high end remotes have all turned to LCD touch sensitive panels. I have a problem finding the button I am looking for in the dark on these as there is not any definition to distiguish keys.

For non stop action where you don't have to take your eyes of the screen, then this maratz is for you. All the buttons are raised and back lit, but it sitll offers a renamable display screen for specialized functions. The more common buttons are raised ones -- like volume/channel/pan and scan, ect. Absolutly every button is reprogramable and simply learns from your other remotes!!! It includes 4 marco keys that can be programmed with up to 20 step procedures. This remote is perfect.

Well worth the pennies!!! (30,000 pennies to be exact :cool

I went and got the radioshack 15-1994 this afternoon, and I love it. I didn't know you could get such a good remote for 30 bucks. I reccomend it to anyone.

I have the Philips Pronto. Expensive ($300) but well worth it. Its a large touchscreen remote that you can program with your computer. You can create as many screens as you want of buttons shaped however you want them. I have not seen any other remotes as customizable as this. You can even load graphics on it. Every button can be a single function or a macro.

I will second the above recommendation for the Marantz Mark V. It's well worth the money for those who can afford it.

Cambridge Audio Multimedia Explorer for me:
http://www.richersounds.com/ under essentials/remote controls.

I would suggest investing in the following features to ensure you don't have to buy another for a while:

1. Macros
2. Ability to turn buttons on/off (obviously LCD-only)
3. Ability to rename buttons (something the Cambridge doesn't do !)
4. Backlight
5. Maintains your settings/macros during battery change.
6. Long range.
7. Learns using its reading eye and IR signal from orginal remote (quick, easy and means it will learn ALL IR code).

hope that helps !

I picked up the 15-1994. I really like it so far, but am having problems getting it to operate my DVD player. JVC 701... Anybody know the code offhand? I tried to have the remote search for it, but it didn't work.

Thanks in advance for your help!

edclem,

I was having the same problem. Under which key are you trying to asign your DVD player? If it is aux2 you need to convert it by doing the following.

Decide what you want to control with the AUX2 key. AUX2 is programmed by default to accept
programs for certain uncommon audio components like graphic equalizers. But you will probably want
to use it for your DVD player because there is no dedicated DVD device key.

You need to set AUX2 to accept codes for VCR's (DVD, laserdisc, and VCR's are considered the same
thing by the remote). To do this, you need to press the following sequence:

P button until red light flashes twice - 992- VCR - AUX2

If, for example you wanted to use AUX2 to control a second TV instead of a DVD player, you would
press:

P button until red light flashes twice - 992- TV - AUX2

After you have assigned a device type to AUX2, program the device key as stated in the manual. Note: the
manual lumps DVD codes under laserdisc players.

This info is courtesy of a thread in the remote central forum mentioned earlier. They have a thread based on this remote that is 10 pages long filled with tips.

Hope the info helps

Geez, the manual that comes with the Radio Shack 15-1994 is a joke--it really is abysmal. I was ready to curse out Gordon32 for recommending this, but a trip to www.remotecentral.com set me straight. This remote is similar to the One For All Cinema 7.

There's a FAQ page here that'll answer a lot of questions. http://ampersand.hypermart.net/one_f...nema_7_faq.htm

Thanks, a good bargain once you get over this hill.
