Stacking home theater components?

I just ordered a Sony BDPS350 player for cheap, and was wondering something: I'm pretty much out of shelf space on my television stand ... would it be advisable/safe to place the BDPS350 directly over top another component? It only weights 6.xx pounds. I was thinking of putting it on top of my HD-A3 ... don't know if it is advisable or not. Anyone?

Yes, that's fine. I'd be a little more concerned about putting it on an amp or receiver, which give off heat. But an HD-A3 would be fine.

I have my 350 stacked on my A35 and it hasn't caused any problems in 2 years.

No problems with most hardware, though I would give an amp/receiver room to breath.

Thanks guys, I'll go ahead and stack them then ... although now it looks like there's a good chance my order isn't going to get filled -- fingers crossed though.

You'll be fine. As others have said: just don't put it on a receiver

I guess that we have all found a use for our Toshiba HD players. I have my 350 resting comfortably on top of my XA1.

Re: Stacking home theater components?

My order for the cheap 350 fell through ... so no more need to stack components for me. Thanks for all the input, guys. I might put my new, cheap PS2 on top of my A3 though, since it's tiny.

Re: Stacking home theater components?

Ok, back with a small update to my question .. I'm thinking of getting the Sony HTS-S360 and stacking the receiver/player on top of my HD-A3. The only thing I'm not sure about is the receiver is a tiny bit larger and heavier than the A3.

It's 0.1 inch wider and deeper than the A3 and about 0.25 lbs heavier. But since it has vents on top for circulation, I can't put the A3 on top of it. I'm just not sure if it's safe to stack something that's a little heavier/larger on top (especially since the small strip that covers the top/front of the A3 is plastic and not metal).

Is anyone doing anything similar and can advise?

Re: Stacking home theater components?

I wouldn't put the A3 flat on top of the receiver because it will block the vents and the heat will eventually cause a problem for one if not both. You can always put some spacers in between so there is an inch or so for the vents. I don't believe the weight of the receiver will bother the A3. I have a 22" LCD on top of my A3 in the bedroom. Not sure of the weight.

Re: Stacking home theater components?

Two things on stacking: never stack heavier components on lighter ones, and NEVER stack a component on top of one with top vents, especially something like a receiver.

Re: Stacking home theater components?

Yeah, I was aware of the venting issue and the weight issue. The weight issue I'm not sure of though, because it's not truly a "receiver" receiver, if that makes any sense. It's one of those home theatre in a box systems that is a dvd player (particularly in size) that functions as a receiver as well. I'm just not sure, if the component on top is a tiny bit heavier (like a quarter pound) than the component on the bottom, if that was a big no-no.

Cheap spacers = hockey pucks

Even cheaper than hockey pucks, juice or soda bottle lids. I use the lids from Apple and Cranberry juice bottles (the WalMart brand 2 liter size) or Fresca in 2 liter bottles. They are black so they don't stand out and allow air flow between components. If you need more space, glue 2 together. I even had a friend ask me where he can get my 'component spacers'.

Not bad. Strong enough for most equipment, although not all.
