ReplayTV problem

I just bought a ReplayTV 3030 from Amazon. I hooked it up correctly. I'm using a direct cable line into the Replay (no cable box) and am using the internal tuner in the Replay. My problem is that even when I'm watching live TV the picture is very digitized and pixelated with lots of artifacts. If I run the same cable line directly into my vcr or tv the picture is beautiful (or as beautiful as cable gets).
When I play the welcome movie prerecorded on the Replay, it is crystal clear, so I know at least the output to my receiver is fine. I think the internal tuner or coax input is messed up.
I called ReplayTV and they said I probably have a weak cable signal. It's strong enough to run my vcr or tv, but the Replay needs a stronger signal since it digitizes everything. They suggested calling my cable company to boost the signal or getting an in-line amplifer. I tried both and neither worked. The cable company says my signal strength is strong.
Replay said I probably got a bad unit and I should send it back to Amazon (where I got it) and get a new one. I'm in the process of doing that now.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Those of you that have a Replay, when watching live tv is the picture quality lower than when the cable line is directly into your vcr or tv? Any feedback would be appreciated!

When you are watching Live TV on Replay, you are watching the show from Replay's hard drive with a few seconds of delay because Replay is recording the show. So the picture quality will be worse because it isn't a "Live" picture, like the connection from your tv or vcr.

Since the Replay unit is always playing the image back from its hard drive, wouldn't the quality be dependent on which record mode you have it set to? If you have it in the lowest quality mode, then seeing the pixelation you describe makes sense. But, if you have it set to the highest quality mode, then it should be crystal clear, according to everything I've read about these devices.
