Hi
i am a poor college student. anyways i have a pair of infinity sterling series that i bought for 100$ on ubid. a jvc receiver(DD) and currently i am listening to my CDs with my sega dreamcast hooked up to the system(cuz i dont have a cd player). of course i am not happy with the sounds emitting from the speakers as they are played through my DC. question is: should i invest 200 dollars and get a dedicated marantz cd player or should i toss out my infinities and get better speakers(PSB alphas) but a cheap cd player(ie jvc ones). which one would provide me with overall better sound on a limited budget?
thanks for any replies

In the spirit of all that is DVDTalk, why not get a nice dvd player (pioneer 525) to use as a cd player (around $200), and either save up money for new speakers or buy something used?

The sound of cds through my panasonic 310 simply shreds what i was used to hearing from my $500 denon cd player. DVD players seem to be like audiophile cd players, but I'm not sure why.

Many DVD players have a problem playing CD-R discs, but they all play CD-DA, it's part of the DVD specs

The average dvd player plays cd's better then the average cd player. You would be hard pressed to find a dvd player that does not give excellent sound on cd's.

I would assume that a $200 cd player would play cds better than a $200 dvd player. Otherwise, why would they bother making $200 cd players anymore, or why would people buy them?

I think you should go to a dealer and try a head to head test of as many dvd players and cd players as you can.

Either way, with a modest system, you probably won't be able to hear the differences. And with a dvd player, you get the option of playing dvds, obviously.

Rule of thumb is that a DVD player used for CD reply will sound as good as a CD-only player half its cost. As steve said, in a modest system the differences might be negligable.

Better speakers usually give better bang for the buck.
