Well, I want to upgrade my speakers, and I have a relatively small room. I can't use floor speakers as space is at a premium, but I do have a lot of wall space. I think a sub/satellite combo, or something similar will work well. I have been considering the following:
Polk RM series
Energy Take 5 with a sub
Using JBL n24's for front and rear and n-center for center, with a sub.
What are your opinions? I mostly use this room for home theater and rarely for music cd's (although I do occasionally). I don't want to go too far over $1000, but would prefer cheaper (i.e. if the Polk are WAY better than the jbl I'll pay the money, but if they are similar I'll take the cheaper one).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. (And I realize that I should listen and decide for myself... I just wanted to hear other opinions and narrow down the choices I plan to investigate).
Thanks!!

I have the Energy Take 5's and I love them I auditioned quite a few speakers, and at this price point, the can't be beat. I opted for the 10" sub, but the 8" was also good.
Give Marc at Audioshop in Canada a call. I got the Take 5's, speakers stands, wall brackets, and 10" sub for ~$780US shipped FedEx 2-day insured. Can't beat that price!
Make sure you listen to any speakers you're considering before you purchase. Also, if you're willing to spend more, listen to the Energy Encore system. The beefier center channel is very nice and better blends the sub into the mix.

The Polk system is very nice. I'm not sure on what the price is on that however. I've also heard that Yamaha has a new one out that's pretty descent.
Let us all know what you decide on.

Bose Pro,
do you know if there is a big difference between the different RM series speakers? I've heard the 6600. Are the 7500 or 7200 much better?

I would recommend the JBL NSP1
(four N24s and one N Center) based on performance vs. price:
FYI: Read etown JBL N24 Review by Brent Butterworth
http://www.etown.com/categories/prod...productID=3637
====(Highlights from review
"For a speaker of its size and price, I can't find anything that the N24 really does wrong. But here's what amazes me about it. First is the bass, which sounds surprisingly full for such a small speaker . . . .
. . . . .When you get a listen to the mids, though, you'll forget how good the bass is. I think the midrange of this speaker may be the cleanest I've heard at $200/pair. . . . . .
I've come to prize the ProMonitor 80 as a mini that gets the mids right, but the N24 gets the midrange even more right. Every singer I listened to sounded better even than on a lot of good $1000/pair speakers.
Performance Rating: 90
Value: Show me a $200/pair mini-speaker that sounds or looks better.
Value Rating: 90
This is the mini-speaker I've started to recommend to my friends and family.
====(end of highlights)
Add any JBL powered sub to the NSP1 package and you've got a killer system that follows the JBL tradition of being Loud and Clear! Interestingly enough, the system balance & timbre is admirably maintained, just in case, . . . if you have to turn down the volume.
I reviewed my JBL NSP1 set @ http://www.geocities.com/p_iturra/JBL_NSP1_RV.html , and this system can reproduce the Cinema Theater SPLs (106 dB - various reviewers commented that the Take 5 cannot do this) easily and clearly in my 20' x 30' w/10' high vaulted ceiling family room!
Also read my webpage "Why you should add JBL N & S Series to your audition list!" @ http://www.geocities.com/p_iturra/JBL_Labs.html . The mastermind responsible for Energy, Paradigm, and PSB Speakers (like Take 5) joined JBL back in 1991 and came out with a more dynamic consumer JBL product, incorporating their highly acclaimed Studio Broadcasting & Professional technology (installed in more than 70% professional installations around the world)!

I also have the Take 5 with ES 10 and am happy with them. I also would look at the Def. Tech systems and probably Paradigm as well.
Finally, you might consider auditioning a PSB set-up using Alpha AVs or Midis and an Alpha Center in front, Midis or Mites in the rear and a Subsonic sub. This would be a great sounding system that would come in close in price to the other systems you probably will consider. I gave my sister a pair of Alpha AVs as a gift and was really impressed by them. They are not as small as, say, the Take 5s, so if you need the absolute smallest speakers you can buy, this might not be a good option (in my case, because of space considerations, I needed to mount all of my speakers on my walls, so size was a major consideration). But, in my opinion, these speakers may be the best bang for the buck in terms of build quality and sound that you can find. PSB speakers are available at a pretty good discount from Sound City -- (800) 888-5343. If you call Sound City talk to Joe at Ext 708.

I've got the Polk RM 7500 and I think that it is much better than the 6500. For one thing you get a much better sub (two 12" drivers). The satellites also sound much better. I think that you can get it delivered for less than $1100 from buyitnow.com with one of their 10% off coupons.

Kelric, this is the info I pulled directly off the home page of Polk. The 7500 is a lot better, but damn, look at those prices. And people think Bose is over priced.

I checked out buyitnow.com, but I could not find them listed. Maybe they do not carry them anymore. I know that they are not authorized, so maybe their supply dried up. As to what BosePro "pulled" off of Polk's site, he inflated the MSRP by about $1000. The true price is $1600. I don't know if I could swallow spending that much on speakers, but when I was able to get it for $500 less I did and I have never looked back. I know have Polk speakers in both my car and living room and I love them. Good luck in your choice.
