I am looking to upgrade my Pro Logic system to DD, DTS. I am looking at two receivers right now for around 350 each.
Yamaha HTR-5240 &
Pioneer VSX-D509S.

Both seem to have the same features, but the Pioneer has a little more power.

Any help would be appreciated.

This isn't the help you wanted but I feel obliged to suggest Denon, Onkyo, and Marantz. They are better brands. Happy shopping!

Actually the Yamaha and Pioneer receivers are also very good. It all depends on how much you want to spend. Denons are only worth it if you spend $1000 or more. Below $1000 the best value is Yamaha and Onkyo. You might want to take a look at the Yamaha 595 and 795 as well as the Onkyo 575 models.

I would definitely have to suggest Onkyo. The 575 is very affordable and has more than enough features. I have had mine for several months now without any problems and couldn't be happier.

Tom, I have the Yamaha V995. Got it for $699 from American Home Theater. I've been VERY happy with it. Also, I've heard good things about the new Outlaw receiver though I haven't heard it personally. You can't go wrong sticking to a Denon, Yamaha or Sony ES.

You're already on the right track. You are being given great suggestions on receivers. Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, allmake great receivers. Between the 2 your are looking at, I would pick the Yamaha. They have a better reputation for their receivers and more features.

Not to confuse you, but as I said before if you are willing to spend allot of money go with Denon or Marantz(which I forgot about before). If you are on a tight budget go with Yamaha or Onkyo as they seem to be the best value for money, especially under $1000.

CLOUD,

I majorly disagree. The new Marantz SR-7000 is one of the best all around units out there and maybe the best value in the 700s. I someone is going to even consider spending around 700 on a unit and doesn't consider this one, it's a travesty. I have the 8000 and love it, but the extra money wasn't a "value" purchase. The SR-7000 blows the Yammy away on music and is better for HT IMHO.

If you cannot afford a 700 ish receiver, then look at the Sony, Onkyo and Yammy 795a. For the 500 range you will get a good value. However, I really think the best values are in the 700 range. The denon 3300 (I think that is the model) and the SR-7000 are major standouts.

The MSRP for the Denon avr 3300 is $999. I paid $875 from a local dealer, but I guess that some people can find them online in the $700 dollar range. I went with a local dealer to avoid the hassle of shipping it back to someplace if I had any trouble with it.

Anyone used the H/K avr 7000? I'm wondering if it's that much better than the Denon for the price...

I just went through what you are doing...upgrading my pro logic system. Heres' what I ended up with:

Harman Kardaon AVR300 (bought it on ebay for $380 shipped)
Panasonic DVD-A115 (bought it for a $140 bucks on ubid.com, refurb)

don't know how much of a power user you are, but I am extremely impressed by what I got...

The AVR300 remote controls everything, its the first full function Universial remote I have had, works good, except remebering the buttons for each device is hard, and button layout is kinda awakward....all in all, pretty good.

Sound City has refurbished Onkyo 575s for $299 shipped. Also, the bottom end Pioneer Elite (VX21?) is a good reasonably priced receiver.
