HDMI -> Analog Display via HT Receiver?
Hi,
A little expertise requested.
Problem 1) I do not currently have a digital/HD TV.
Problem 2) My current DVD player will not read DVD+R discs but my laptop will.
What I would like to do instead of spending money on a new DVD player is to channel the A/V via HDMI to my receiver (from my laptop) and pass the video to the TV via Component/S-Video (reprocessed by the receiver).
I realize that this is probably based on the receiver's capabilities but I just wanted to know if this is a fairly standard solution ..or more complex; even possible. For reference I own a Pioneer Elite SC05.
HDMI ---> Receiver (Component/S-Video) ---> TV
Thanks guys ....

I don't think any receivers will downconvert from HDMI to component.
Can your laptop output any other video format?
EDIT: A similar discussion here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...8211936AAaVevL

It is dependent on the capabilities of the receiver. There is a term for it, but it is escaping me right now.

Just VGA. No other video outputs available.
I should have realized this before, but I'm assuming that I won't even be able to pass a signal from a DVD player through a HDMI connection anyway, right?
I'm such a newb on this stuff.

If you are not interested in BD then there are probably any number of inexpensive dvd players that will output via component

You can get a transcoder that will convert VGA to component, but they generally cost at least $100. You might as well buy a new player.

New player, seriously. That way you don't have to worry about signal loss.

yeah, looks like a new player is the easiest/cheapest option
get a philips 5990 or 5992. you can get them for $30-50 and it's easily made region free, has a usb in and can play any file format.

Yeah, looks like a cheap new player instead of a laptop solution. I had been planning on purchasing an economical region free player within the next few months, then Blu-ray next year. Looks like the time table is up.
That's the exact player I had in mind ..as goofy looking as it is.
Thanks again everyone ...

You can get a VGA to Component cable from Monoprice for less than $3.
As long as the receiver can handle the signal from the computer, you should be fine with that.

Re: HDMI -> Analog Display via HT Receiver?
Only if your VGA card supports that.
VGA is not component but some video cards allow output of component when you add a special dongle or from within software.
Monoprice warns about making the assumption that all that is needed is the cable:

This cable is primarily used for connecting video projectors with Component-in capability through it's VGA port. It can only function with a VGA port that is either able to recieve or transmit Component signals (Y, Pr, Pb).
IT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPONENT VIDEO SOURCES TO A REGULAR COMPUTER MONITOR OR HDTV unless you monitor specifically has this capability. Most do not. (Please check the documentation for your computer monitor)
