The NCS (National Console S?????) released yesterday that a modchip has already been created for the PS2. The received a chip and verified it allows a user to circumvent region lockouts.

Sony is rumored to be planning on fighting the mod chips. Expect them to constantly change the PS2 and its software to defeat the mod chips as soon as they are released. They will probably make the DVD driver updates look for modchips and try to defeat them. It will be a constant battle. I like Sega policy of letting the modchips work. They know their games can't be copied so they don't worry about piracy.

Well Sony has already announced that the US version PS2 will have hardware dvd decoding instead of a software based one like the Japanese based release. So Sony can't defeat the modchips simply by forcing new drivers. However, we consumers lose out in the sense that if it was software based we had the possibility of future upgrades that included the possibility of progressive scan. NCS noted that one belief is that Sony doesn't really mind the piracy. It causes a lot of people to buy systems that probably wouldn't have otherwise. Thus increasing the installed base and helping them make sweet deals with companies, etc. I think that rationale has some merit.
