Here's a seemingly trivial question. Or so I think, who knows, maybe I'm opening a can of worms

DVD players dont tend to build up much heat, VCR's not too much either ...... but I _know_ receivers build up heat. Question of the day is, how much heat can they stand before I cook something. I want to know exactly how much airflow a receiver should have before I pack it into a shelf under the TV in the TV stand. Its not sealed, the back is open a bit, and the front fully, but the reveal around the edges of the receiver will be no more then an inch on each side, and the top. Is this enough, or am I going to end up turning my receiver into an expensive electric grill?

Also, if its ok, should I put it under, or over the shelf where I put my DVD player and VCR?

Thanks to anyone who responds in advance.

FWIW, the receiver is a Yammie HTR5240 ... seems to run not that hot in the grand scheme of things.

This is not an expert opinion I have but this equipment is expected to run warm when it's designed and unless the thing is getting smoking hot, you're probably safe.

If you don't think you have enough airflow and it really is getting too warm perhaps you can find a small, quiet fan to increase the airflow to the receiver or perhaps directly cool it. My cousin does this with his equipment for peace of mind.

It is also going to depend on the brand. Sony's receivers are notorious for running very hot and if they are too confined overheating. I have always tried to leave at least an inch over the top of the receiver open and also have the back of the entertainment center open so the heat does not build up too much.

Same problem. My receiver has only 1/2" clerance at the top of the rack. The solution: I bought a Radio Shack computer fan and an AC/DC converter. Screwed it into the back of setup. Cooled it down considerably.

A lot of components are designed to run hot, but I always felt that this shortened their life span (not really sure about that).

Most components need about an inch or two of clearance from their vents. If there are no vents on the sides, then no clearance should be needed. You should leave about two inches of room from top vents, since this is where a lot of the heat will escape.

A R.S. ran is a good solution. I've gone to a discount store and bought a cheap/quiet fan, and plugged it into a switched outlet on the back of my receiver for a very effective cooling solution. I would suggest mounting it on your shelf blowing over the receiver's top vents.
