BD - PS3 vs Newer Stand-Alone models?

Hello

Ahwile back I was seriously looking for another BD player and being a part-time gamer (have a 360) the PS3 was a no-brainer with the cost vs features. I've started looking again but now after checking some of the newer models of BD players I'm left wondering if the newer crop has advance technology wise more than the PS3?

I'm not up on the latest PS3 specs but so far it appears some of the latest models from Samsung, LG, a forth coming Sony BDP-S560 and the acclaimed OPPO BDP-83 have left the PS3 in the dust. I'm wondering if Sony plans on upgrading chips and other parts to keep the PS3 competitive as a BD player. We have a Sony tv so that was another reason for looking at the PS3 but like I said why buy older technology when you can get the latest for the same cost?

PS3 if you don't mind the loud noise of the fan. I have several different blu-ray players and the PS3 is the best all around player. I just can't see spending $500.000 on some of the other players.

If by loud, you mean close-to-silent...

The only time the fan would be loud is if you're playing memory/graphic-intensive games for a long period of time, or if you have the console in a confined space with little ventilation.

I have mine on top of my entertainment unit completely unobstructed by anything, so it's got all the air it needs.

As for cost, I'm not a gamer at all, aside from a couple of those free demos. I use PS3 for everything else - BD, video file playback, photo gallery viewing, occasionally music file playback, and that makes the cost worth it in every way. For that I'll likely never buy any other type of machine for Blu.

The only problem I have with the PS3 is heat in my 10x15 room. The noise is nothing but the thing is like a small portable heater.

I agree. Here in AZ today it's only 109 degrees. Add the PS3 to a room and my AC would not go off.

If you are going to put it in the living room get the PS3. For bedrooms I recommend A stand alone player. If you have wireless networking in your house for your computer the PS3's features are invaluable. This is the plan I'm going with(when I have the money.)

I don't understand these posts - I've had my PS3 for almost a year (80gig MGS-bundle) - no heat no noise.

You'd probably be one of the only ones.

The heat I can understand. But not the noise.

Well, if I get right up next to it, I hear the faint hum of the fan and feel some warmth coming out of it's vent - but it's minimal and a non-issue since I'm usually 5 to 10 feet away.

The 80gb models have been known to make fan noise, but the 40gb models are considerably quieter. Anywho, I have an Oppo BDP-83 and it's really, really quiet. I can't hear a thing during playback.

Re: BD - PS3 vs Newer Stand-Alone models?

left the PS3 in the dust? LOL.

Do they play some audio codecs I have never heard of? Are the 1920p capable or something? How exactly have these models left the PS3 in the dust? What kind of advancements can be made to make any player head and shoulders better than a PS3?

Do these new players stream music, movies, or pictures from my server? If they stream Netflix, they are equal to the PS3 (PlayOn!).

A PS3 is a great media center BluRay player that I would recommend as a main player for anyone. If you want to save some money or don't find any of the extra features for the PS3 useful, get a stand alone.

Oh, and I still don't "get" the noise issues. Mine is silent.

Re: BD - PS3 vs Newer Stand-Alone models?

I was an early adopter getting a PS3 the first Christmas they were out.

Out of the box, I almost returned it. It was so flaky!! But once I got it going and did that initial FW update, things really setting down. After the 1st couple of FW upgrades, my only complaint was with the remote issue. But now that there are IR to BT converters (if a little expensive) that really is not a complaint any more.

I prefer using my Toshiba HD A-3 as my SD player. But my son, wife and kids use the PS3.

I have mine standing on end by itself. Occasional fan noise, but once the movie is going unnoticiable. Never really noticed a heat issue. Kids don't play a lot of games, but we load d/l the free samples and son has loaded a lot of music on it.

My PS3 is virtually silent as well and doesn't seem to produce an excessive amount of heat, and I've got a 60 gig.

I don't hear my PS3 unless I put my ear right up to it. It's a lot quieter than my Xbox 360.

I think everything is a lot quieter than the 360. Mine sounds like a jet taking off ...
