I recently upgraded my reciever to a Sony strde 845 but now I'm having trouble gettign the sound the way it should be. The way I have it set up is that I have the 6 5.1 cables running from my Sony 530 to the imputs in the reciever and I also have an optical runnign from the dvd to the reciever. The problem is that when I have the reciever set to 5.1 it sounds like crap and there is no bass what so ever and I can't seem to change any of the settings eith it in this mode. When I have the input comming from the optical it sounds better but I'm not getting 5.1 sound I'm only getting prologic....meaning 3 front channels and a surround channel and it says subwoofer not LFE. What am I doing wrong here? Is it something I'm not doing to the DVD player to get the output right or is it not set up right? Thanks all in advance for the help.

I'm not sure why you would be using both the 6 channel output from your DVD player and the optical as well.
I would think you would want to use the optical output alone. Given that, you say you are getting sound only from one surround channel? One thing you may want to do is send a test tone to each of your speakers to make sure all are working and are being seen by the receiver.
Based on what you see from that, we can proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Oh so I don't have to use both the 6 channel and the optical? I can just go with the optical?....and when I say I'm not getting a 5.1 signal I mean that my receiver has lights for rf,lf,center,lr,rr,surround, subwoofer, lfe, prolgic, and dolby digital. I only get lights for rf,center,lf, surround and subwoofer and it says prologic. I think it should say dolby digital and should have lights for 5 speakers plus the lfe. Sorry if I'm beign confussing.

Also, once you are only using the optical cable your player should be set to bitstream or digital out, not the 5.1 channel internal decoder.
You also need to make sure your source is outputting a DD 5.1 signal. Some discs default to pro logic and you have to press the audio button (or make a selection from the DVD's audio setup menu) to select the DD 5.1 soundtrack.
Try a recent Warner disc like Matrix. I believe they default to 5.1 DD.

Thanks Mike, John and Blade. I'll try these things when I get home tonight. I think the main problem is that I don't have a manual for the DVD player itself. I'm pretty sure I've been setting the sound on the discs I've tried to 5.1 but maybe there's something I'm not doing to the actual player menu.
