I just got this dvd player and it plays 3 of my dvds fine but will not load the matrix. 1) Why? 2) What is a firmware upgrade? Do I need it? Where do I get it? Thanks a million.

1. Not familiar with this player so can't say if it's firmware related.
2. Firmware is the term given to the chips in your player that tell the player how to do what it does. An upgrade to this, means that new features, or bug fixes has been created and you need to take your player in to get the chips swapped out.
3. Call your Samsung service rep in the area (should be a locater number in your manual or on their website) and they'll explain the procedure to you.
Hope it goes smoothly and solves your problems.

It is a firmware problem. Samsung was offering a free chip upgrade a while ago. Not sure if it still applies. There is all kinds of info on the player at: http://www.709online.com/starthere.htm
Being that you just got it, I would take it back and see if you can get one that was manufactured as recently as six months or so ago. That should have the newer chip.

Yes the 709 requires the firmware upgrade, call up Samsung and find out the location of the nearest authorized service center. If you have had your player under a year it is still under warranty, mine was, and the upgrade will be for free. A word of warning though, from the beginning I noticed little glitches in the 709, skips and stuff like that. I was new to DVD so I thought it was dust on the disc. The basic problem is that the player is poorly built and very glitchy. I got rid of mine and picked up another model. I would suggest you do the same if possible.
