I have the Pioneer 525, which has DTS output.

Could someone explain what exactly DTS sound is and why it's better ?

If I buy a DTS dvd will it work in my dvd player as is or is there something else I need ?

Thanks.

Short answers:

DTS uses a less compressed signal than DD and so is supposed to sound better.

My opinion is that there is a difference, but it depends on the quality of your equipment (and ears) as to whether you'll notice that difference. If you know what an audiophile is and are one yourself, then you will definitely want DTS.

Just to be able to play it, you will also need a DTS decoder in your receiver. It should have the DTS logo on your receiver if it has it.

You'll also want full range speakers at all 5 positions in addition to a good sub.

I'm sure others will be able to fill in any holes I left.

The only other thing i would add to Blade's message is you will need either a coax or optical cable from the DVD player to your receiver. Otherwise the digital signal will not be passed.

Good point. Which reminds me, if your player only has a coax or a toslink connection, make sure your receiver has a matching digital input. I think the Pioneer has both, but better to check and be safe, than to be sorry.

....of course, you'll still be able to get good old stereo in case you don't have all the other equipment for DTS.
