OK, which is best bang for the buck out there. If I were to bite the huge bullet and get one of these babies, which one should I get (40-42 inch models, 50 inch are ludicrous) and why. (prefer HDTV capable too)

If you don't get many responses here, you might want to try a site that's a little more tech heavy than this one.

I guess you could also check www.audioreview.com but I'm not sure how helpful that would be with such a big ticket item.

Finally, given the cost of these big screens, you might want to consider looking into front projection systems. They cost quite a bit, but you get a great picture with a screen size measured in feet rather than inches.
