it also has six-channel input for an external DD/DTS decoder, such
as Technics' SH-AC500D. but what is it?
I thought I had all the goods when I baught this receiver?? can anyone help me with this!
My DVD player is a Panasonic A120.

Since the Pany 120 does NOT have the decoder built in, it is a wise investment to have it on the receiver. This way you can enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS. What is it you ask? Dolby Digital is a format that enables separation of channel into left/right/center fronts and left/right back + output for the subwoofer(bass) so that each speaker is dedicated for certain tasks. This is listed in the format 5.1. Five separation channels + 1 subwoofer. This way you can enjoy truer surround sound effect instead of simulated surround sound you would experience with Dolby Pro Logic and such. All you need right now is 5 speaker and 1 subwoofer to enjoy DD/DTS. DTS is just another format similar to DD, except that there is less compression therefore theoretically have a better quality sound. Some people can decipher the difference between the two, but it is mostly a matter of preference. Since DTS is less compressed, it takes up more space on the disk therefore, some DTS have less features on them compared with their DD counterpart. The six channel input is for future upgrade. Around the horizon is the implementation of 6.1 from both Dolby and DTS. The additional channel will be dedicated to back center. You will need additional decoder to enjoy this upcoming technology. Personally I don't care too much about the new channel as I don't have any space for this additional speaker placement. Well, that's the low down with DD/DTS 101 course. Hope this help you any...

There should be a coaxial or optical (or both) output on the back of your DVD player, hook this into the Coaxial or optical input on the back of your receiver (usually says digital in or some crap like that).

Given the choice, I'd use the coaxial, mainly because it's cheaper. You should be good to go now.
