Ive had mine since early january and havent had any trouble at all.. I love mine.. works great, cheap, and it had the hidden menu to turn of regions and macrovision.
actually, i did have one odd problem the other day... when i try to play stuart little - collectors edition - full screen.. it skips right past the main menu and into the special features screen. so I havent figured out how to watch the movie yet. But it could be a bad disk. havent exchanged it yet
Ive played 60-75 dvds on this player, and never had any problems before with any of them. Ive also watched quite a few vcds without any problems. and of course Ive used it for mp3s.. everything so far has played great
Nevermind.. Kevrm just pointed out how to get past that problem.. :-)

This is quickly becoming a thread that will be moved to hardware...but here goes anyway. The undocumented macrovision and region features as well as the CD-R, VCD, MP3, PAL capabitilies made this a must-have (2nd) player for me. I love that it plays EVERYTHING, but it has its quirks. I've noticed a split second of artifacting sometimes when scenes change, and sometimes at certain points when scenes aren't changing in Birdy. It takes several steps of set-up to dub to a tape, but not many other players gives you that ability at all, so you can't complain. Not only do you have to disable the macrovision at start-up, but since the player doesn't output analog sound and dolby digital simutaneously, you have to go into that menu too. I feel the need to also get a more high-end player eventually, and use the APEX only when necessary.

There is artifacting all over BIRDY for some reason. Ironically, I got this movie and my APEX on the same day, so this is the DVD I "tested" it with. I was almost ready to return the player, but luckily I watched a few other titles first.
Overall, the player does very well. It definitely has a tendency to show artifacts occasionally where another player might be more forgiving. I've had no major problems with it and the bonus features (disable macrovision, disable region codes, play PAL/MP3/etc.) more than make up for any minor issues. This is an ideal 2nd/bedroom player.
The only other issue with this player is that it cannot handle seemless branching, so titles like STARGATE and THE ABYSS will not play properly. Yet another reason to make this a 2nd (not primary) player.

From experience this is a great second player, but a poor main player. I have made use of the multi region abilities and the mp3 and like the player, but the seamless branching problem and the pixelation on many discs makes it a standby player. Hopefully they can update the firmware and fix this problem. Of course that might remove the secret menu as well.

The Apex AD-600A (manufature date 9/99) is a great primary player. The three problems it has are:
1. difficulty handling some dark scenes
2. difficulty with movies like Stuart Little and The Abyss
3. overheating in some units
There is a minor 4th problem. It is not for sale anymore with a loophole menu. The Apex was the only DVD player shipped from the factory with a menu to turn off Macrovision and regional coding.
The critics here are more severe than at any other site that reviewed this unit. Everyone else says the Apex is a great player, except for those postings from people trying to sell Raite 711 and 715 DVD players.
The current Apex DVD players at Circuit City and elsewhere have the secret loophole menu disabled. If someone finds another sequence of key strokes to access the loophole menu, this DVD player is a bargain. If the changes to the loophole menu result from a permanent EPROM chip chamge, that is bad news for those without a full featured Apex.

I love my Raite AVPhile 715 that I got from Ubid. It plays everything I throw at it except one dvd: Earthscapes (simitar release). It works fine on my computer's dvdrom, but it turns up as "unknown format" with my Raite, which sucks hard, because the only reason I bought this dvd was to listen to it on my home stereo system. Anyone else have any similar problems?

Re: APEX DVD PLAYER HELP!!
So - the other day I was trying to figure out how old our trusty Apex was (the *special secret menu* Apex as per thread resurrection). I searched the archives and figured our Apex is going on 10 years! I still use it every night (watch a lot of Brit TV at bedtime) and honestly can't believe its still plugging away.
Just curious if anybody else still had the Apex and if others were still working? $139 (it was the last one at Circuit City and had no box so I got it even cheaper than the $169 list) / 10 years = pretty good bargain

I've got an Apex. Grabbed it for $50 at Circuit City back in October of 2002. It's not my primary player anymore but it still works great.
