Subtitles in Fast Forward?

Why do the subtitles always disappear during fast forwarding? I like to zip through some boring sections on foreign films, but I still would like to speed read the lines!

I'm pretty sure it is because the subtitle text is overlayed onto the picture.

If the subtitles are actually burned into the video then you will still see them when you fast forward.

Most subtitles on DVD discs are encoded as a subpicture stream, which is overlayed on top of the video during normal playback. Subpicture streams will not display properly during fast forward or rewind, so most players wont show them at all in these modes.
