The Blu Ray Recorder?

I heard Hollywood is against the idea of Blu Ray recorders and they will never be released in the US.

Is that true?

A guy in the newspaper said you could get them in Japan though.

Re: The Blu Ray Recorder?

Yeah, my computer has a Blu-ray burner and I haven't even used it yet. Blank media prices are still a bit too high for me.

Stand alone Blu-ray recorders are becoming popular in Japan though. PVRs never caught on over there, so DVD recorders (with hard drives) were what most people in Japan used to record TV. Now this is shifting towards BR recorders.

Re: The Blu Ray Recorder?

Does anyone own the standalone blu ray recorders and used it with their TV?

I don't suppose you could site your source more specifically, or provide a link, could you? "A guy in the newspaper" is about as vague as you can get.

Anamorphic does not apply to HDTV or Blu-ray.

I looked at a couple of Panasonic recorders on Amazon.co.jp. They were about $900 U.S. and Amazon won't ship them to the U.S. I guess the question is, is there a source for importing them?

Re: The Blu Ray Recorder?

I'm hoping they are cheaper by the time I go to Japan in the fall. I want to bring one of these bad boys back home.

I remember seeing one of the original Blu-ray recorders for sale in Japan back in 2004 or so. It cost several thousand dollars and used BDs that were encased in plastic caddies. In other words, completely incompatible with current BD technology. I'll bet those early adopters are pissed.
