You know, I'm not an idiot (some people here would disagree) but I have not been able to figure out what the transfer rate is on my pioneer 414. Does it stand for how well the transfer came from the original source or something more interesting? Thanks.

"Transfer Rate" usually refers to the average bit rate of the compressed MPEG-2 video stream on a DVD disc. It varies by title, not by player. Some players have a display that will show the the average compressed bit rate of the video stream on the TV screen.

In general the higher the bit rate of the compressed video stream, the better it will look.

The maximum bit rate for compressed video streams on a DVD-Video disc is 9.8 million bits per second. The typical bit rate for single layer, single sided discs is about 4 million bits per second. Dual layer discs will average a bit higher, probably in the 6 million bits per second range.
