Surround Sound System Has No HDMI In - How to Connect BD Player/HDTV?
I guess I'm a little n00bish on this, but I appreciate any help.
A friend of mine is getting a Sony surround sound system free with his new Sony HDTV (it's a Sony Bravia Surround Sound System - model # DAV-HDX576WF). However, it doesn't have any HDMI inputs.
How can he connect everything together?
He has a Blu-ray player, a DirecTV box, and of course the TV/surround sound system.
What is the best route here?

HDMI from Blu-ray player to TV for picture
Optical or coaxial digital from Blu-ray player to sound system for audio
is probably your best bet.

Since this is a home theater in a box with integrated DVD player, He'll connect the receiver to the TV with an HDMI cable. That'll handle the video. Any other HD source (satellite, BD player etc.) will have to connect to the TV using it's own HDMI or set of three component video cables. Audio from those sources will have to be connected via the Optical or Coax digital inputs to the receiver for multichannel sound. He can use the old red and white audio connections on the receiver for sound, but I think he'll be limited to Prologic II for sound with those. Nothing complicated here as this equipment won't handle any of the advanced audio codecs. SD sources can be connected to the receiver in the normal way.

^ Me too. Until I have to upgrade to a better receiver, I'll have to stick with DD/DTS 5.1 which works fine for the size of my living room.
For video, I have the Monoprice HDMI switcher because my TV only has 1 HDMI input.
