From http://www.projectorreviews.com/advi...pvslcdhome.php

With variable lens shift you can set the height of the projector relative to the screen, over a very wide range. This is where LCD projectrors have the advantage. Generally due to the internal design of an LCD projector "engine" vs a DLP projector "engine", it is much easier to implement lens shift in an LCD projector. As a result, popular, affordable 720p LCD projectors like the Sanyo Z3 and Panasonic AE700u have it, while in the DLP world the least expensive 720p projector with lens shift is Optoma's H77, which sells for around $3000 online. That's almost twice the price of the LCD projectors.
I think DLP provides better-quality images than LCD, however.

There was a time when projectors were an expensive thing. Times they are a changin'. The InFocus X1 broke open the market and set the whole darn business into a pricing free fall.

I don't think making your own projector these days would come anywhere close to the deals on 3-4 year old projectors on eBay for $250-350 range. In fact, a quick search of DIY projector forums show a great number of "Is this old projector any good?" threads.

Building your own projector these days is simply a curiosity experiment for the tinkerer who likes to build things. It's not a way to save money.

The only way it'd be worthwhile is if your time is worth nothing, you have access to all the parts for free, and you don't care about quality. Someone's hand-me-down projector just a few years old is going to be an infinitely better-value and better projector overall.
