another help me question....
ok i have my dvd player hooked up to the Receiver via the coaxial cable.. when i play a dvd i only get sound from the Receiver i get no sound from the tv speakers at all.. is there a way i can get it so that when playing a dvd i get sound form both the Receiver and Tv at same time.. i do have my tv hooked up to the Receiver and watching regular tv i get sounds from the Receiver its only when in dvd mode i can not get sound form tv.. just Receiver

Why would you want the sound to come from both the tv and your receiver? You do have speakers right? I am confused.

so i guess i wont need sound form tv speakers then...... was not sure if i was supposed to but from what you say and have researched your not supposed too..

No, I apologize. I think maybe I am not following you. Personally, I have my TV speakers off. All my sound runs through my receiver/speakers whether its cable, dvd, video games etc.

you ok you had it right. i have speakers hooked up with my receiver... but wanted tv speakers to have sound also while watching a dvd so i get sound from both tv and receiver speakers

Your receiver gives you surround sound from the DVDs. If you use the TV speakers simultaneously, it will mess up the sound. Most tend to just turn off their TV speakers forever when they get surround hooked up.

I think I know what your saying. There are times when you are ok with DVD thru TV INSTEAD of the receiver. I have this set up in my living room in case I want to watch a movie when everyone goes to bed.
It depends are your equipment, but my DVD has HDMI out and coaxial (or optical, don't remember) out (amoung other things). My TV has HDMI, but receiver does not. Soooo, I ran a HDMI from DVD directly to TV. This carries both video and audio. I also ran and optical from the DVD to the receiver.
When I use the receiver, I turn down the volume on the TV. When I just want to watch thru TV, I don't turn on the receiver and just use volume on the TV.
But I agree with others, you would never want to use both at the same time.

On the off chance that you want to do what Sdallnct suggested and use your TV speakers sometimes instead of your surround-sound system, you need to have an audio connection going from the DVD player to the TV. Since you don't say how your DVD player is connected to your TV, we can only guess what the best solution might be. But assuming your TV doesn't have HDMI, then the most basic connection would probably be red and white analog audio cables.
