deal good enough to jump on?
our old 36" tube tv in the living room is about to die.. so the need to replace it is a little pressing, but not urgent.
i have an old sony wega tube tv in my bedroom.. i had planned to get a 42" lcd or plasma for my bedroom.. and 50 or 52" lcd or plasma for the living room. with all the great reviews.. i was leaning towards panny plasmas for both. from what Ive read.. Im not too concerned with 1080p.. seems 720p will suit my needs just fine.. financially, I was planning to hold off a little longer, unless a deal came by that i just had to jump on... i just noticed this one on FW.. and am wondering if its worth jumping off the panny bandwagon and hopping on this deal.. the plan would be to go ahead and get this to replace my dieing living room tv for now.. then move it up to the bedroom when i break down and get the 50/52" later. toshiba regza 42" lcd 1080p for 950 shipped http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-REGZA-...6751928&sr=8-1 it helps that there is a 20$ off coupon.. and I have 50$ amazon cash laying around too... |
Not that great of a deal and not that great of a TV (IMO).
Wait for the Panny's. |
meh.. looks like i missed out on it already anyways
the panny is still 200$ plus tax more than this was.. and I havent seen any good deals come up on those.. bah |
Well, I'd say hold out within 30 days and you should be able to find a 50" Panasma for around $1000-$1300, and it might even be 1080p. I remember around May of 2007, my 50" sold for $1350 or so. I'm sure a deal is coming, so just squeeze out as much CRT Jiz as you can. :D
|
the 36" in the family room may or may not make it that long..
it goes black pretty regularly.. a good whack on the side of it, and it will come back up.. sometimes it stays up for 2 minutes sometimes for 2 hours.. my 8 and 3 year old kids love when it goes out because they get to take turns 'whapping' it. |
dammit.. there are 3 back in stock.. just taunting me
someone go buy them before i pull the trigger |
I bought a samsung 42" plasma model 4264 for 899 I love it.
|
I thought I read yesterday that the 42" 720p Panny (new 8 series set) was on "sale" at CC for $100 under list, and ontop of that there was a 10% coupon floating around. Without looking up any numbers that should put you around $899 if I'm not mistaken.
|
yea.. the 720p panny is 900 at amazon as well.. and i have $50 in coupons.. and there is $20 off..
so i could get it for 830$.. which is a great price.. but part of me is saying to hold off on 1080p on that one, since ill want to put either a 360 or ps3 on it.. and those really make you drool when you see them on 1080p at bb.. that damn 1080p toshiba lcd keeps coming back in stock at amazon and tempting me.. i may have to go ahead and get another tv, just to avoid that temptation! |
this one?
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TH-4...6984666&sr=1-5 or this one (which is 40$ more) http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Vier...6984666&sr=1-8 1080p is 1130$ although.. i have also kindof been hoping to see this one come back in stock http://www.buy.com/prod/panasonic-th...204793763.html |
this one is pretty tempting for my family room too

Why don't you just go for a 58" Panny. When I bought mine it was almost twice the price it is now.
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...se=&lang=en-US If you go for the 50" you will wish you went bigger. I have a 50" in my bedroom now and it actually feels small. |

Might bear repeating,
Your just not going to see the benefits of 1080p on a 42" set unless you are sitting way to close or using as a computer monitor. In general I would say the same thing about the 50" version (Get 60" or bigger, then yea).. That is what makes the 720p such a good deal. Marketing is pushing the 1080p so the 720p's are a great deal now. I would take the 720p panny plasma over most of the 1080p out there. The panny will have a better picture. I ended up with a 1080p Samsung LCD 46" set for the living room. I'm not disappointed, but it is NOT as good a pic as the 720p panny's and yes, I have HD and HD dish. I went with LCD as I got scared as the room was so bright. But kind of wish, I had stuck to my guns and gotten the panny. |

I haven't noticed any issues, etc, but again I'm not nearly as versed as some of the folks around here. I went over to the AVS Forums and pulled some break in settings from the thread specifically for the 5054. I'm waiting a bit before moving the 360 from my Samsung 32" LCD to this, since I'm still breaking it in and don't want myself or the kid doing any gaming on it yet (worried about the kid playing for hours when I'm not around). I actually PM'd the Fry's price at HHGregg when I bought it (actually got it down to just a bit better than the Fry's price at the time, $1070, and got HHGregg to knock down the price of their 5 year Protection Plan $100 as well, and got HHGregg's 12 mos deferred interest at the time). So this morning I went down and got the $70+ difference in what I paid and the Sears advertised price under HHGregg's price protection plan. |
well.. i caved in to my wife..
i had to go out and get new tires on my car oday (ugh) and i had mentioned the deal at sears, but said i was probably going to pass but she went over to sears, and since i was next door getting my tires, she called and said i should come look at the tv.. i went over and it looked nice.. and was advertised to have a 10% cash back or 0% financing for 24 months if you use a sears card.. 10% off of 999 for a 50".. i couldnt pass that one up.. after the guy rung me up, he started looking for info on how i get the cash back.. eventually he learned that their signs were wrong and it was suppose to be 10% off a complete home theater purchase with sears in home installation.. since i had already made my purchase expecting 10% off.. the manager said to just go ahead and adjust my purchase by 10%.. which meant i also got back the tax i had paid on that 100$ (wouldnt have gotten that with the cash back offer).. I opened a sears card to make the purchase.. and it came an extra $10 thank you bonus on your first purchase, as long as its not a promotional offer.. because they credited me the 10%, instead of getting cash back, it wont show as promotional. so 999.99 + 80 (tax) - 108 (adjustment) - 10 (sign up) = 961.99 i can live with 720p at that price. |
Awesomeness!!! But which TV is it??? I lost track!!
|
samsung HP-T5054
yea, its an older model and only 720p but couldnt pass up the price i saw the 999.99 on fatwallet.. but noone else has even mentioned the extra 10%.. so maybe that really was a mistake. |
I'm telling you, for that size set 720p is fine. You would never see the benefit of 1080p on that size set sitting a proper distance. Your eye's simply are not good enough regardless of the source. (Of course there would be benefit to 1080p if you were using as a computer monitor). But in that size set I would never pay extra for 1080p.
What you do need to do is read up on break in. Some say something you should do, others think no. But educate yourself, and personally I would "break it in". Next, find the thread over at AVS for that set. Read up and find out what everyone's favorite calibration is. You might want to buy your own calibration disc, but at least try the settings you find at AVS. I'm using the settings found for my set at AVS and am very please. Out of the box, my set (LCD) was way, way to bright. But just turning down the brightness resulted in a dull picture. So I found the thread for my set at AVS and printed out the 4 or 5 different settings people seemed to like and tried them all. Ended up using one with a slight modification and very happy with the results. Calibration does make a HUGE difference. And you might need to do it for each source you have. That set gets great views. It tends to get overshadowed by the Panny, but The Samsung has a great following and get great reviews.

I always try and purchase on the heels of a new model coming out, so I can cash in on deals just like this. |
I've had the Samsung since September of last year and really love it, and just now getting into Blu-ray as well.
I definitely had to deal with a break-in period, as playing Madden on 360 too often shortly after getting it left some image retention that lasted a good amount of time, although Samsung has a rolling screen that helped get that out. These days it hasn't really been an issue at all. There's a stickied thread on the set over at AVS, but a lot of it is loaded with posts regarding flicker and judder issues, although I haven't really noticed either. |
I definitely think the Sammy's look nice. They may be third behind Pio and Panny, but not by too much. (Plasma of course).
Any pictures?! |
