IKEA - a good source for shelving units?

Just curious if anyone has bought their shelving units at IKEA. If so...

1. What did you get?

2. How has it worked out for you?

3. Are you planning on getting more of the same as your dvd collection grows, or are you looking at something/someplace different in the future?

We're at the point where we need to start thinking about different accommodations for our dvds, and there's a gargantuan IKEA store that just opened within the last year roughly 15 minutes from our house, but I don't want to go there if it's not worth the time/effort/gas.

Thanks in advance for all input!

I ♥ IKEA.

I didn't want to at first, but between my girlfriend and the stream of 80's music they'd play, made it a pretty pleasant shopping experience. I've also bought some shelving there - there was a couple of "Billy" bookcases and I just bought a $15 Flärke CD/DVD rack. Everything's worked out perfectly, so far. In fact, I might even change some of the shelves to glass instead of wood (as suggested HERE).

I can't remember the name, but if you don't need to hold a lot, I like the Ikea one's that hang on the wall with a glass door. It is long and norrow like a display case but could be used for DVD's.

But yea...Ikea is a good place for stuff like that.

I have two Billy's with glass shelves, and have been very happy with them. I have DVDs on one and CDs on the other.

There's a pic of mine on page 1 of the linked thread.

I actually just picked up two Billy's last night w/ glass shelves. After a few weeks of debating how I wanted to do this I decided on the Billy shelves.

I haven't had a chance to set them up yet, but they looked nice in the store. I was concerned about the depth of the bookcase... but I think the glass shelving helps with that. I look forward tonight to setting them up, getting rid of the old shelves and reorganizing!! Each one I have heard holds about 400 dvds... so I got two and if I like them enough I'll probably pick up another. They are relatively cheap and they have been around for sometime so hopefully as the collection grows I can just get some more Billys.

Oh and plus they match my bed

I have 2 Billy's with the doors. Only beef was door hinges are in the way of the shelves if you want maximum shelves for DVD's (7 total shelves I think) I had to drill some extra shelf holes to fit 7 in each billy

I originally bought the doors, and took them back for just that reason. It's been a few years so I forget the specifics, but I know they resulted in losing one if not two shelves because they screw into the same peg holes used for the shelves.

Re: IKEA - a good source for shelving units?

Sorry to bump this thread, but I need some help. My self-built shelf is pretty much out of usable space, and I have limited room left. I was hoping to get a couple of the $15 Flarke shelves from Ikea but it seems they don't stock them anymore (they hold 100 dvds each). Does anybody know where I can find these shelves?

I used to own four of them but as my collection grew I built my current shelf and sold the others to friends... really wishing I would have kept 1 or 2 of them now.

Craigslist. Pretty sure they're out of print for good. We had a bunch and had to start buying them used to keep expanding our DVD collection. At that point I started putting stuff in slimcases to start saving space.

Yup. We have 3. Two for the wife's DVDs and one for my DVDs/Videogames/gaming equipment.

I drilled a few extra holes for the extra shelves, but what I settled on was one shelf in each unit that is a tiny bit too small for DVDs because the hinges kept me from maximizing DVD space (without re-drilling all of the holes for all of the shelves...no way). It's just big enough to fit HD-DVD/Blu-ray so it's the HD shelf.

We drove about 2 hours south to go there and get the Billys. Barely stuffed three of them + glass doors + extra shelves into my '00 Grand Prix. (Put down the passenger seat and squeezed the doors into the passenger area diagonally, quite the sight...and the Billys themselves sticking out of the trunk).

Totally worth the effort. Great shelves and the glass doors + Ikea child safety locks keep the kids out of them. Yay!!!

I have some OOP Docent shelves with TV unit and a Billy Bookshelf in Medium brown. I love them.

I hate how quickly IKEA decides to discontinue stuff. I used to have the Metallic Grey Billy Bookshelves but they stopped making that. Then I switched to the Black bookshelves and they have stopped doing that too. You can't even buy extra shelves anymore (the wood ones). All they offer now is the glass.
