Anyone have a Slingbox?

I saw this while surfing the web the other day and am considering it. I would hook it up to the cable in my room at my parents house so that I wouldn't have to pay for cable at college (3 hours away). I most likely would be using it to just recieve the SD content, no HD.

So I'm just wondering, does anybody have one of these or heard good/bad things about them? Which version of the Slingbox do you think is the best?

My buddy has one and loves it. He travels a lot so he watches tv/yankee games/tivo recordings on his laptop while on the road.

what would you be watching tv on?

Mainly just local channels and ESPN.
Do you know which one he has? Is it the most basic model?

Yeah, that would be the most basic one.

What about one of these? Does anybody have one?
It's called the SlingLink™ TURBO and you just connect one box to your router and plug it into the electrical outlet and then plug in the other box into another electrical outlet in some other room and you are able to have internet capabilites in that room as well.

I have wireless internet in my house, it's just that the signal has a hard time reaching my room in the basement clear at the other end of the house. So I am not able to connect to X-Box Live at all. I would also need these to use one of the Slingboxes.

Are there any other alternatives like this Slinglink out there? I tried googling for something but I really have no clue what something like this would be called so any help would be much appreciated.

I've been thinking about one of these as well. Any chance of using it at work (Websense)?

I have a Slingbox as well as the SlingLink, although I don't use them together. I use the SlingLink to connect my XBox (upstairs). My Slingbox is wired directly to my router.

The Slingbox works well, and I use it mostly to watch TV on my computer in my office. Since I am streaming data across my internal network, the data rate is pretty good. I have used it a couple of times from my laptop when I go on trips. Streaming over the internet you lose a bit of quality in the picture. I try to watch it in a smaller window, which helps.

Yes I have one. Realize that the quality of the Slingbox is limited by your parent's upstream bandwidth (typically 256kbps-1mbs). At the lower end your video will resemble YouTube quality. Not something I would want to watch for very long.

Also you will want a dedicated cable box at your parent's house or risk fighting for control of the cable feed with a local person.

The technology is called Ethernet over Power. Netgear (and most likely Linksys as well) make a few products that accomplish this. They also sell wireless range extenders, but I've never been all that impressed with those. Just some other options.

anybody have the slingbox solo?
what kind of bandwidth do you need to sling HD content?
is it feasible to get HD over the internet or is it only for your local network?

also, what is this HD-connect cable? why would you need it if the slingbox solo has component connections?

The Slingbox Solo & Pro support HD, but they don't actually output HD quality over the internet. You just get the 16x9 aspect ratio.

The HD-connect cable isn't needed with the Slingbox solo. You do need it for the pro as it doesn't have component inputs/outputs

Note, you get the HD support when streaming internal to your network.

Does a VPN setup affect this? If you're on the road I'd imagine you could trick your computer/Sling?

I've got a slingbox pro and I love it. The other posters are right, however, that it doesn't sling HD over the internet -- only over your network.

i just found out they are releasing a slingbox with true HD in 3rd quarter this year.

it looks like the current solo/pro does not stream HD even on your own local network, but this one does. They are called "HD compatible".
