Should I be watching HDTV in 720p or 1080i? What about movies, video games?

You should be watching them at whatever the native resolution of your display is.

OP: set the output to match your screen's native resolution.

And, if it's a smaller tube TV, it can probably output at both resolutions.

It depends.

For example, if you are using a cable box, most of the time the scaler from your TV is better than the one in the cable box. So, you should output the native resolution from the channel, 720p or 1080i to your TV, so it can do the scaling.

Not to be negative, but I never saw a tube TV that could do this. High-end CRT projectors, yes.

Will I notice a difference if I am currently running an A2 and HD cable box at 1080i, which is the native resolution for my tv but end up running everything thru my new receiver that will convert all signals to 720p?

Then you will have lots of conversions, some unnecessary. If all your sources run through the receiver and it converts everything to 720p, then your TV will take that and convert it to 1080i. If those are the forced issues, I would run the A2 and cable at 720p to save on excess conversions.

But doesn't the receiver allow for passthrough, at least for HD resolutions?

To be honest, I am not sure if the 605 allows pass thru for HD resolutions or not. I will have to check on that one as that would be a plus in my case!

I think it passes through HDMI but if you use component it's going to downconvert to 720p.
