New receiver and PS3 questions

I just picked up the Pioneer Elite VSX 92 TXH and I've a question about getting the sounds right from my PS3. Currently regardless of what type of audio is coming from the PS3 be it a game, dvd or BD the receiver indicates it as PCM. Is this what I should expect? I watched Hostel 2 last night with the uncompressed PCM and didn't notice anything coming from my surrounds at all - where I would expect there to be.

I think I set the PS3 output option to be bitstream. Is this what I should be using? I am using HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver.

When using the HD DVD add-on on the 360 it switches to DD or DTS depending on what I set but had questions about the PCM. Thanks.

I set my PS3 to "PCM" because (for the moment, hopefully to be resolved in a future firmware update) it can't pass certain audio over bitstream but it can decode it internally. I can't remember which though....I think DTS-MA? Anyway, it's the same with my Onkyo...no matter if I have it set to bitstream or PCM, the receiver shows PCM. However, I do get sounds from all speakers depending on whether is 5.1 or 2.0 etc.

Your PS3 needs to be set to LPCM audio. Provided you are runing HDMI directly to Amp-HDMI from Amp to TV/monitor. You may also have to go into the Amp menu and designate input/signal types.

Thanks guys.

Yes I go from PS3 -> Receiver -> TV. I'll take a look at the options within the receiver to see if i am missing anything.

No problem, this should solve your issue. If not let me know.
