Dumb HDMI question

I'm getting a new set with HDMI inputs and I have dumb question.

HDMI carries both audio and video, correct?

So, if I add an HD-DVD player - for example - and run an HDMI signal to the set (ostensibly for video) would I still run RCA audio outs from the player to my non-HDMI receiver? Or does using HDMI cables somehow negate everything else?

thx

hdmi is both yes, but what I would do is use a digital optical or coaxial audio to go to the receiver for the audio and use the hdmi mainly for the video. the sound should still come out of the tv speakers, but if you have a reciever and separate speakers, digital optical would be the best way to go, I believe.

Yes, you'd still have to run audio of some sort to the receiver, preferably optical or coaxial digital.

When you get an HDMI receiver, you'll run an HDMI cable to the receiver and one from the receiver to the TV.

Edit: Robin beat me to it.

Well, if the HDDVD player has analog multi-channel output via RCA, then that would be the way to go over digital/coaxial. Unless the OP actually meant 2 channel RCA, of course.
