RCA V Component

Can I use regular RCA cables to connect my DVD player to my TV if they are really short, like 3 feet, or will there be a noticeable degradation of quality. I would use fairly heavy gauge cable and connecting a Phillips DVP-642 DVD player to a Sony Wega 27" CRT flat screen.

Can't say for sure. Video really needs to have coaxial wires.t will likely be visible in some way, how much it bothers you is another story. Decent component wires are pretty cheap.

I've done the same thing with the same player and TV using both junker RCA cables and component cables. There was no discernable difference.

Cool, because I've got a TON of RCA cables, this means I only need to get an S-video cable to connect my cable box to my new (used) TV

If you have a ton of cables, you're better off using just the yellow video part of them for each of the component connections. Those are most likely to have the same impedence (75 ohm) as component cables.
