HDMI based volume regulator?

I cannot stand the differences in volume between channels, hell between DD and even PCM of shows vs commercials within the same channel...

I know they sell things like this:

http://www.smarthome.com/7848T.html which use RCA red/white connectors but do they make any that are HDMI passthroughs/connectors?

And no, my receiver, an STR-DG910 does not seem to have this capability or even a "night mode", ugh.

No. Very doubtful they ever will, IMO.

The analog signal in the RCAs is easy to modify the volume because it is already in a format that is essentially ready for the speakers. An HDMI version of this would have to have a digital decoder and encoder just to be able to do it. And it would have to understand every single possible signal type now available. Basically, there's no point unless it is a full receiver.

How does your Mute work on the receiver? On mine I can set it to various levels of negative volume instead of just zero. So I usually have it at -10db, and use it frequently for all the problems you mentioned.
