HDMI vs DVI, same thing?

For example, I am going to purchase an Xbox 360 which now has HDMI outputs. I want to play it on my LCD monitor which a DVI input. Is there anything fancy I need to do for video or can this be accomplished with just one straight cable. Thanks!

HDMI to DVI, provided your display is HDCP compliant.

My TV is DVI only and I've used the same HDMI->DVI cable for years without any issues.

Monoprice.com if you need the cable.

I go from my laptop (DVI) to my TV (HDMI) with a simple cable.

HDMI carries an audio signal. DVI does not. So in my computer setup above, I have to connect a separate audio cable.

I've had good luck with this place.

Excellent HDMI to DVI cables ranging from $5 to $15 for a 6 footer. Ignore the $120 Monster cables at Best Buy/Circuit City.

Hmm OK how about another question:

Assuming I can buy a HDMI/DVI cable to get video, what would be the best way for me go get sound? Is there a way to hook up the audio out from the XBOX into my PC and hear sound from my speakers?

Probably. You can configure the XBOX for audio out using RCA and get a RCA to 1/8" stereo mini cable and plug into the line in of your soundcard. Might not sound that good though, just a warning.

If I can wiggle a question in here....

If the TV is not HDCP compliant, do you not receive a signal at all? I recently got a hdmi/dvi cable, but I don't get a signal from my HD-A2, and Cable.

Ive read online that this particular model of TV, even though it says its HDCP, it really is not, its just a DVI for PC

Here's a question...My tv has a DVI port that does have HDCP. I plan on getting a few devices that have hdmi. Is there a way i can split the 1 dvi from the tv then convert them to hdmi for the devices?

You need an HDMI switch and an HDMI-DVI cable going from the switch to the TV.

You need an HDCP stripper. Monoprice has one, but they are expensive.

I finally received my XBOX and was able to sucessfully get HD quality video from the HDMI <--> DVI cable. Sound is still an issue though.

The only outputs on the XBOX 360 are the HDMI and the special 360 cable which has a "slot like" end that goes into the 360 and a whole bunch of colored prongs that would normally plug into a television. My computer does not have a spot to plug those into. I bought a cable that has the red/white plugs on one end and the 1/8 mini plug on the other, but the x360 doesn't have a spot to plug the red/white audio out plugs into.

Any suggestions?

You can get 2 couplers to basically attach the plugs that the 360 cable provides to the mini-plug adapter you already bought. Kinda ghetto, but that's probably your best bet now.

Yeah no kidding. I'll try out the double coupler idea. Thanks!

My tv doesn't support HDMI so when I got my upconverting dvd player I bought a monster HDMI-DVI cable on ebay for $20 and it works great, it was probably stolen or something.

Well I purchased the coupler(s), Got home, hooked all the cables together and attempted to plug it into the xbox. The problem is that the system is designed to only have either the HDMI or the other standard audio/video plugged into at a time. The Plug is so big on the other cable that it completely blocks/covers the HDMI port from being used at all.

So now I'm back to square 1: How can I play my xbox 360 on my computer monitor and have sound?????????

Does the xbox have a VGA option? Does your LCD?

Holy shit, I ran into this same problem last night and was on the phone with Microsoft for 2 hours trying to explain that the HDMI-Premium is crippled because it doesn't come with the RCA/Optical Audio Adapter the Elite did.

I argued that it was just a ploy to sell more cables because the only option I have is to buy the $50 360 HDMI pack that comes with the dongle and an HDMI cable I don't need.

They didn't understand that I don't have an HDMI receiver AND that I don't use the speakers on my TV for sound (let alone is 2.0 audio good enough).

At the end of the call, the only option they gave me was to buy their cable or a 3rd party (Monster which costs more) adapter to expose the optical port without sacrificing the HDMI.

What a load of shit. I'm going to try running the HDMI to the TV and then using the Optical out from the TV to the receiver to see if the TV will pass on the DD5.1 that way. I don't know because I haven't even opened the TV yet - my credenza isn't arriving until Friday.

My monitor definitely has a VGA port. I believe I can buy a special cable that hooks to the XBOX and has VGA on the other end that would plug into my monitor (giving video), but then how would I get sound?

I never dreamed it would be this difficult!

I would assume the VGA solution for Xbox has a sound portion since VGA does not incorporate sound. But I really don't know much about Xbox.
