PS3 vs 360 vs Stand-alone Upscaling?
I just ordered a PS3 and expect it later this week. I recently got an HDMI-enabled 360 and currently have a Denon DVD-557 (1080i) upscaling player attached to my 42" Westy LCD.
I know that I can get 1080p out of each of the consoles, but I don't know if that's going to buy anything over 1080i from the Denon to be deinterlaced by the monitor.
The TV only has one HDMI input (none on the receiver) and I don't have a switch to do side-by-side comparisons.
I'm just curious what the general consensus is on how the consoles compare to an average stand-alone in DVD upscaling.
Sight unseen, I'm leaning towards using the PS3 solely since it'll have Blu-Ray and switching back to the Denon for DVD seems a pain, without extra investment.
Any opinions or perhaps a thread that already addresses this that I missed?

I have a PS3 and had it since X-mas. Meaning I saw the before and after of the fw upgrade to give it up scaling on SD.
Yes, it does a great job. I do have a HDMI switching so I can quickly move between units. My main DVD player is the V. D1, that I did the mod on (awesome image on the D1 w/custom settings). I'd have to say the PS3 is so good, I could almost remove the D1 from system. Almost.
Again, maybe I'm just a wimp, but I don't like using the PS3 as my main DVD player as my remote cannot control it. Yes the game controls are fairly easy to use and I bought the dedicated DVD remote for it. But it is a pain in the ass. Not to be able to use my Harmony.
If I were not worried about games (my kids use the PS3 for gaming and son has even loaded music and such on it), and I had to get a new DVD player today, I'd probably pick up a Toshiba HD player. Their entry model (or maybe last years model) can be had for $300 or less. Is reported to have an excellent upscaler for SD, and almost as a bonus, it does HD.
In fact, tho I modded the D1, it is still a little finicky. I may order a new loader for it or I may just pick up the Toshiba. Use it as my main DVD player and then also be a dual format supporter.
