Camcorder Advice?
Besides looking to put together a new home theater system (check my other thread), I am looking to get a new camcorder. I keep hearing that a Hard Drive camcorder is the way to go, as opposed to MiniDV, MiniDVD or DVD.
What kind of video and audio quality do the hard drive camcorders record at? How much video can I get at normal quality on a 30GB drive? Any reasons why not to do the hard drive version? Also, any suggestions for a certain model?
thanx!

Do they survive banging around? I've never been fond of HDDs in mobile equipment although I have some. I treat my iPod like a ming vase, same with laptops. So, very happy with MiniDV tape. Theoretically a HDD model should be great, esp the speed of uploading to a computer, if it has enough storage space. But I've heard others with the same questions about longevity, skipping and overall performance of the drive.
According to Sony in reference to one of their models:
Stay away from DVD of any sort is my thought. For the reasons above x10.
I would like a solid state storage medium like Panny's SD card models. But they are so small. I don't know.
The question you didn't ask is....HD?
According to Sony in reference to one of their models:
60GB holds approximately:
• 8 to 22 hours of high-definition footage, depending on the video setting
• 14 to 41 hours of standard-definition footage, depending on the video setting
• 8 to 22 hours of high-definition footage, depending on the video setting

MiniDV is totally the way to go. Higher quality (the HD kind usually need to compress the video), and you don't have to then back up the files you create, since they are on tape.
