I have a question about Widescreen TVs and anamorphic stuff.
I'm using a WS projection screen, but whenever I watch a 1.85 anamorphic movie, it fills up the entire screen. Hell, even when I'm watching Deadwood on DVD (which is presumably 16x9 and should fill up the entire screen perfectly), stuff gets cut off.
This seemed incorrect, so I switched my TV to 4:3 mode to check what was wrong, and my suspicions were correct: In this non-anamorphic mode, I could see stuff on the top and bottom that were being cut off in the WS presentation.
2.35 movies work fine and I'm positive the DVD player is set to WS.
So I have two questions:
1.) Why don't I have minimal bars for my 1.85 movies?
2.) Why are even my 16x9 DVDs appearing cut off?
Edit: And as an example, I was using the opening shot of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with the mountain top. In the default WS mode, the top of the mountain is on the top of the screen. When switched to non-anamorphic, you could clearly see a lot of the sky above the mountain.
I know that the difference between 1.78 and 1.85 is only 3.9%, but from the above shot, it sure seems more than that.

In the projector menu, try to find a way to turn off/down overscan. But for some stuff (watch out for NBC HD shows) you may want it on, so remember how to go both ways.
