42" Sharp Aquos Problems - Is It Defective?
I recently (meaning about four months ago,) and I've been using it for gaming, movies and TV. It's worked flawlessly for the most part, but I'm starting to notice some weird things about it, and I'm starting to think that it may be defective. I just hope that, if it is, my warranty will cover a replacement (it'd better - I didn't spend $300 on a warranty for nothing.)
The major problem that I had with it occurred two nights ago, while I was playing my Elite (XBOX 360). The game was a bit too loud, so I tried to turn it down by using the Aquos' remote. But, although the red light/indicator came on when I pressed the button, the volume didn't go down and the volume bar/indicator never appeared on the TV. So, I decided to try to change channels and that worked, but I didn't see a channel number anywhere on the screen (usually the channel number appears in the top right corner.) I ended up turning it off and on a couple of times, but that didn't help at all.
I also checked some other buttons during that time, including the menu button, and the input button. The menu didn't appear and the input menu didn't either. Instead, it would just switch to a random input after twenty seconds. It went to the same one a couple of times and then finally went back to the HDMI input that my XBOX 360 Elite is on.
I ended up turning it off and then I went upstairs and went to bed, figuring that I would deal with it the next day (yesterday.) But, when I went downstairs to try it out, last night, it worked fine, which really perturbed me.
Some other problems I've experienced may not be the TV's fault, but they could be:
1) I have Bell ExpressVu HD satellite and, after having it hooked up to that TV for about 2.5 months, I noticed that the colour had disappeared from every channel, even though the component input hadn't been touched. Instead of full coloured images, I just get a black and white image with a little bit of colour and a very strong yellow colour everywhere. I'm going to trouble shoot that with Bell, but I'm starting to wonder if it's the TV...although I doubt it.
2) I had a problem when I turned my 360 on the other night. There was video, but I wasn't getting any audio. My friend and I fooled around with the HDMI cable, but the only thing that seemed to fix it was turning the TV off and then back on.
3) I can't get my PS3 to show video through HDMI. I've heard about problems with the PS3 and HD-TVs through HDMI and that it is a pain to set it up through that, but I don't know if that's it.
I've heard that that particular Sharp Aquos model had problems with something called 'banding.' Does that have anything at all to do with any of my problems? Any ideas of what it could be? Think it's defective? Any thoughts/replies will be appreciated.

That's what I thought, but I've never experienced a problem like that with any other remote that I've used, even if the batteries are almost dead.
Is it normal for remotes to have only a couple regular functioning buttons when the batteries are dying? I mean - I thought it was the TV because the TV wasn't showing channel numbers, or displaying any of the menus, even though the remote seemed to kind of be working.

But, you're sure that's all it is? If so, I'm glad that I won't have to fight with Sharp and the store I got it from, to get a new TV...

I disagree with fighting with Sharp, I had an issue with my 32" LCD and they didn't even ask when I bought it or where and gave me a place to get it fixed. Problem was intermittent sound, ended up being a bad solder joint, all working great now. My 42" Aquos has been working like a champ.

I'm just hoping that all it is is dead batteries causing problems with the remote's signal. I'm hoping that I won't ever have to ask Sharp or the store I bought it from, to fix any problems or give me a new TV. *Knocks on wood.*

i too have the 42" Aquos and it works like a champ. i love it. i've had it since april.
i'm looking for a new tv to replace my 27'' in my bedroom and found a 32'' Aquos for $700 at best buy recently. it's only 720p, but for the price and for the bedroom, i think 'll grab it.
