I recently picked up the Toshiba XA2 to go along with my new Mits 46231 LCD. Have been viewing my SD DVD's on it and WOW!!

I am going to agree with the OP. Upconverting is bad, compared to seeing the source material in HD (with a great signal or on HD DVD/BD).

But that's about it.

Subtle? I am hearing its plain as day

If you had a capture card in your PC, you could use that to get pics as well.

Hearing? About video artifacts? Try not to put much stock in people who use terms like "night and day" for every comparison they make.

This thread is too funny, but not in a good way. The difference between upconverting and good 480p is very small. It's not even worth debating really. Once you've seen the difference FFDShow makes simple upconverting is nothing in comparison.

I got my Oppo in the mail yesterday... and there's a big difference from my old progressive scan Panny. DVDs' with good transfers come across looking like HD, at least broadcast quality HD.

Impossible. DVD's were only meant to be shown in 480p.

Shhh, don't let Zollman think your sarcasm there is real in any way, he might try and argue some more about the issue, lol.

Impossible. Broadcast quality HD is the best signal we have right now. HD discs are as good, if they bother to try.

Well it depends where you're getting your HD from. I have Timewarner Cable, and although it's flippin' fantastic, I found HD-DVD's that were able to be reference quality for the format, to be better. For example, The Sopranos Season 6 Part 1, King Kong, etc.

A TV signal that is received via cable is not broadcast. Broadcast is over the air, and Spiky is right --- it's the best quality possible. When delivered via cable or satellite, the original signal is compressed, compromising quality.

Alright, well then my apologies, didn't know there was a huge difference in the terminology there. I stick by my word though, DVD's look almost HD with the upconversion on my Oppo.

I have the Oppo 981, and I agree with you. My urge to buy into one of the HD disc formats lessened considerably once I got the Oppo hooked up.

Well, they are all compressed, including OTA. You probably don't want to know how much.

You're right, I meant to write recompressed. The compression artifacts do irritate me, even in OTA HD. My local NBC affiliate especially has macroblocking when there's a lot of movement.

The are probably bit-starving the signal. 1080i should be run with the full 19Mb stream available in a broadcast frequency, most stations barely even approach 17Mb. NBC affiliates love to have sub channels, do you have some? Although NBC itself doesn't bother to try real hard for live events, either. The NFL last season was atrocious. They just don't seem to get that the facts and figures of how HD signals work are real and shouldn't be altered.

They have one subchannel, which is supposed to be weather radar, but all it shows is a message saying radar is currently unavailable and they're working on bringing it back.

All of the transmitters for our local channels are split between two towers that are just a few hundred feet apart, 19.5 miles north of my apartment. I'm on a hill and have a clear shot at the towers, so signal strength shouldn't be an issue.

The CBS, ABC, Fox and CW affiliates are flawless. PBS has a tiny bit of macroblocking, and NBC is awful.
