Relationship between set resolution and 1080i

If a tv is 1280x720 is it capable of displaying 1080i or just the 1920x1080 sets? I've noticed that sets with different resolutions all say the HDMI input is 1080i and curious about what's what. I have an older Sony HD set with DVI input and a SD dvd player with HDMI output hooked up with an adaptor cable. The DVI input is 1080i and the player has four tv settings: AUTO, 1920x1080, 1280x720 and 720x480(I believe the third is). When the player auto detects it chose the 1920x1080 setting but I get this annoying vertical bar that strobes right to left across the screen. I changed it to 1280x720 and the bar disappeared which leads me to believe this is the correct setting for my tv. Curious what a television set's resolution means in regard to the set's 1080i input.

720 sets can usually accept a 1080 signal. They will then convert it to 720. Select whichever looks best for you.
