I have the HP LC2600N (26" LCD) and it has a CableCARD slot. I thought the CableCARD was decent, but Comcast could nto support it for anything. They gave it to me FREE at first, then started charging me the same price as a cable box after a year...which they said it would be FREE forever. silly me to believe them.
However, the channels would get screwed up a lot. Some channels were completely different, some did not come in correctly. I finally gave up and just bought a HD antenna since I could care less about the other HD channels. |
A small update now that I have the CableCard installed:
Everything is working great. I was definitely worried since I've read a lot of horror stories about CableCard installation and usage similar to DJ Longfellow's above. The technician took around a half hour to get everything working. I think I lucked out because it seemed like he had done a bunch of CC installations and had most of the bugs worked out. Prior to arriving, he had already called a couple people back at the office that he was going to get things running. He called them again once he got here, but my impression is that those phone calls took a couple minutes when they otherwise would have taken a lot more time. I get 12 HD channels with either the box or the CableCard, and I only got 2 when I was using the new TV's QAM tuner. As I mentioned previously, the only local HD channels we get are CBS and PBS. Once NBC, Fox, and ABC get added ("some time this quarter") the ratio should look something like 15 HD channels vs 5. I can get Fox and NBC over the air right now, so the only things I'm missing is ABC in general and being able to watch the super bowl in HD in my living room -- no ATSC tuner there. Interestingly, the cable signal in my bedroom was/is borderline weak. Back in my analog past, a few channels were ghosty. This has been completely solved by going digital. No drop-outs, ghosts, or weak images. The LG TV definitely does a good job with SD signals, too. |

I have no complaints about the TV. :)
HD looks great. SD looks as good as possible. DVDs look far better than I ever thought possible. I used component cables (and therefore, no upconversion) while watching Cars, and it was really amazing. I got the HDMI cable last week (a super thick and impressive one, courtesy of monoprice), and have only watched the Cars special features since hooking it up. Again, no complaints. I really can't imagine that it will look better than what I saw over component, but I've never professed to be much of a videophile anyhow. As I glance over at my 32" Panasonic CRT (SD) in the corner of my office, I wonder how long it will be before I break down and replace it. If everything on the current LG continues to work, I won't hesitate to go the CableCard route again. |
Help?
Just read this thread. For the record I have a Sharp LC-32D6U with Comcast cable and it's great. As everyone know you forgo the DVR, GUIDE, PPV etc that you get with the box but I don't need that in my office anyway. Very happy with the TV and the Cable service.
Here is where I was hoping for help. I am looking for the same Cablecard and LCD setup WITH a built in DVD player for my son's playroom. The only one I;ve found is the Toshiba 32HLX95 and it's been discontinued. Can anyone help? |

Speaking of eBay, somewhere toward the end of this thread it dawned on me that I could use eBay's search to find more CableCard models. It was probably the easiest way I've found to compile anything resembling a comprehensive list. |
