In the store the picture I was looking at looked better than my 34" from just a couple feet away but may have been a HD picture. It was a basketball game with a Showtime HD logo in the corner. I am hoping the display ability of standard dvd would be equal to the 34" with a greater distance from the set to compensate for the larger picture.
Ok, I'm far from an expert, but I'll try to help a bit. I'm usually sitting anywhere from 10-12 feet away from the screen (60"). I don't have anything permanent set up yet (we've recently moved and still unpacking stuff), and so far, I just dug out a decent progressive scan player and hooked it up using component (with very cheap cables, because I still have to find my good stuff in the many boxes I haven't unpacked yet). The player doesn't do any upconverting, so I'm depending on the TV to do that. I also haven't done any calibrating yet, I've just started using it right out of the box (I've only had it about 4 days so far). So considering the above negative points, when I say "surprisingly good" I just mean that I expected a standard DVD (not using an upconverting player through HDMI) blown up on a 60 inch screen (I'm used to 32") to look worse than it does. The discs I've sampled so far (Fifth Element Superbit, Kill Bill, Spider-man 2, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) all look very good (but not amazing great). Nice detail, and fantastic vivid colours. I saw this TV playing a Blu-Ray demo disc in the store and was totally blown away, I think it will handle HD VERY well.

Anyway, if you will be sitting 12 feet away from a 50" version and using a HDMI connection, I'm sure you will be quite pleased with the picture from standard DVDs.

I prefer DLP. I bought a Toshiba 52" DLP a couple years ago. I picked it because I thought it had the richest colors compared to LCD and Plasma and no burn in. I liked that I could replace the bulb myself, which I've just done. To me, there is no point in have a super thin TV if all of the components (DVD player, receiver and cable box) are going to stick out 10 to 14 inches anyway.

I had the room for a DLP or RPTV but liked the fact that I could get my plasma up on the wall. I happen to have a closet next to the tv so it acts as my media closet.

If I could use in-wall speakers you would not see one component in my room. I remember a few years ago I wanted everything out. I wanted peopel to walk in a just see components, grunt and go get me a beer from the fridge.

Now I want everything hidden. And I dont want my TV to be the focal point of the room unless it is on.
