Embarrasing newb question about 5.1 sound.

I have an Onkyo receiver. I've always used the white and red audio cables from my 360 and my DVD player. When I set the receiver to surround it sounds like crap. I have to turn the volume way up and only get sound from the front speakers. My friend said if I bought a toslink cable it would help out. Can 5.1 sound come thru with white and red audio cables or do I need the optical toslink cable to hear the difference? If not what I'm I doing wrong with my receiver?

No, you can't get 5.1 through the red/white audio cables. You will need to feed your receiver with digital audio, either the optical toslink or coax. Don't know the specs on your receiver, but it could possibly support both. Either one would work fine. Just match what outputs you have from your DVD player and 360.

P.S. You will notice a substantial improvement in your sound if you have surround sound speakers (front/center/rear/sub) once you get a digital cable!

I wouldn't say your the idiot in this, it would of been the sales person who sold you 5.1 speaker system without selling you the proper cables.

Well actually I am the idiot. I bought everything from Onkyo.com. No salesman required.

There's a reason they pack owner's manuals with these things, and Onkyo's are some of the better and easier to understand ones.

Also, strictly speaking you don't have to specifically use a toslink cable. You just need to use the digital connecitons, either toslink (optical fiber) or digital coaxial. Both will provide the same results. It just depends on what your source devices use and how many inputs your model of receiver has of each.
